Trouble TTC

glucose test

Is it weird that I never had the glucose tolerance test and both of my RE's agree that I have PCOS?

From what I see on this board, most of the ladies with PCOS have had the glucose tolerance test.  My first RE I only saw for a few months, then I moved out of state, that's why I have a new RE.

Is this something that I should ask my RE about, or is it pretty normal to not have this test done?

Re: glucose test

  • Um- I have the GTT done, but I don't know that you need it though. I did find out that I was IR, but I was already on Metformin, and would have taken it regardless of it I was IR or not.

    Sure couldn't hurt to ask.

  • Yes, if you have a PCOS diagnosis you should definitely have the GTT.

  • Maybe they could tell from your A1C level in b/w that you are already diabetic?  Have you been told you are diabetic or are you currently on metformin?  Because while I do not have pcos, I know my RE has mentioned my diabetes and my A1C level before agreeing with my gen. Prac. on how much metformin they wanted me on.

Although I didn't have a baseline prior to taking Metformin, I did FAIL (really bad) the GTT, and was not only diagnosed as IR, but also fully diabetic. I was sent to my GP for treatment for that- and my A1c came back at 5.1, which is completely normal.

I don't know if my blood sugars are under control due to the Met, or my body is just able to compensate. I am not doing anything other than taking the 2000mg of Metformin, and have been doing well.

Just wanted to clarify that the A1c wouldn't necessarily indicate diabetes, it didn't in my case.

Was that your A1C after taking Met?  Because if so then yes, the met is keeping it under control.  If that was your A1C before getting on met...then I'd say no you were not diabetic, your are IR & Hypoglycemic.  It's differant.  I was Hypoglycemic almost my entire life until the last year and a half, my pancreous pretty much gave out and now I'm diabetic.

  • Yeah- I kinda figured it was the Met that was keeping me normal. I also don't eat a ton of sugars/carbs, and a pretty healthy diet, so I may be controlling it with diet as well. I didn't ever have a baseline without Metformin, so yeah- I believe it is the Met.

After drinking all that crappy glucose drink- I felt like CRAP, and my blood sugar was WAY out of control.

  • I was Dx with PCOS before having the GTT done.  I asked my Dr. about it and he didn't really seem to care whether I had it done or not. But I asked for it, I want Metformin if I need it. So, I have mine scheduled on Thursday.
