Separation Anxiety

I'm a lurker and love reading everyone's questions and comments.  They have really helped me out.  Now I have a question.  My daughter is 7 1/2 months old and about a month ago we've noticed that she would cry when we go to our parent?s/ her grandparents houses for a visit.  She has gotten better.  Now, she will only cry if they hold her or get too close.  However last weekend, one of my friends stopped by and she cried when she tried to play with her.  We were surprised by this separation/stranger anxiety since she goes to daycare and his held/interacts with many people.  My overprotective husband doesn't want to leave her with our parents/ her grandparents when we go out to dinner on our "dates" in fear that she will cry the entire time.  My view is that she'll get over it and end up playing and having a great time.  I was going to drop her off at my parents for an hour or so while I ran errands next weekend to see what happened.  I know separation anxiety is normal and she'll grow out of it, but any ideas?

What works for me is I just have to walk away. After 10 minutes of me being out of the room, she stops crying and even smiles. Once she has some time to get used to who ever is holding her, she is fine, even if I come back in the room.

  • Natalie started having separation and stranger anxiety at 6 months. I've started leaving her in the nursery at church and she's been doing a little bit better. She screams when I first drop her off, but she stops crying after a few minutes and will start playing. She can't see me, though, or she'll start crying again. They have a pager system where they can page me if she doesn't stop crying and that makes me feel better.

When I take her to see my grandparents (or other people) and I'm there with her the whole time, I let her play and see them for a while before anyone gets close to her or tries to hold her. After she's warmed up to them for a while she will usually let them hold her for a few minutes at least.
