Getting 8 month old to eat chunkier food

Any tips on getting an 8 mos old to eat food that is not super pureed?  My little guy tends to make a dramatic gagging (and some times vomiting) scene when I try to introduce chunkier (but still soft and mushy) food.

Thanks.

  • My DS does the same thing. Even with foods that desolve quickly. I started giving him toast this week, just small bite sized pieces. He seems to be doing better with the gagging. He will even gag from drinking from a sippy cup.

  • I am in the same boat with my 7month. he gags with chunkier foods and yes sometimes vomits. I have been adding in different things slowly but still happens. I try when he isn't super hungery or excited and seems to do a LITTLE better.Mums veggie crakers are the only thing that work so far. I have tried the organic puffs, mushier bananna but not pureed, yogurt bites, all with the same response.  Good luck.

  • i first want to say that gagging is not choking and you shouldn't confuse the two.  most babies will gag in the early stages as they figure out how to handle the thicker food.  However, if your baby is doing this consistently, he/she is probably not ready yet.  Hold off for a week and try again.  Go by your baby's cues.....dont rush them.

Couldn't agree more.  Two totally different things.
