Anyone taking Acyclovir?

Ugh...For about the past 5 years, when I get sick I get a case of "oral herpes". CryingThey are like fever blisters, but I get them on my face. It is a huge patch of painful blisters that usually grow to about the size of a quarter if I don't catch it in time. They are mosty caused by my sucky immune system since I don't have a Thyroid and since I am pregnant, it is getting harder to stay regulated.

Well, I am at work and noticed a patch of this crap forming on my cheek. (SERIOUSLY??) I am prescribed Acyclovir for them, but I wanted to see if anyone else is taking them. All the research I can do shows that they are rated by the FDA a Class B, which is safe to take. And of course, it is Sat night and I can't call the Dr. until Mon. And if I wait until then it will get waaaaaay out of control if it isn't treated ASAFP!!

WWYD? TIA!Sad

  • Your doctor has an emergency line.  Call that tomorrow.

  • I HAVE to take it the last 8 weeks of this pregnancy to prevent an outbreak that could transfer the virus to my baby during birth, so I assume it is safe. My doctor said it was ok for me to take now if I needed it, but I haven't had an outbreak in over 3 years, so I haven't taken it in even longer. Acyclovir and Valtrex (brand name) are both often prescribed to pregnant women with genital herpes so they don't have an active outbreak during birth.

Thanks Sarah! I was hoping someone would have taken them also to help me out. I feel MUCH better now. And I am still going to try to call my OB in the AM. Thanks again for the advise!
  • They are perfectly safe for use during pregnancy.

<-----work in pharmacy (and plus also I use it and already asked my doc just in case.)

  • I too have had terrible outbreaks of cold sores/blisters on my face during this pregnancy. The outbreaks have increased in number as well. I take Valtrex 500mg daily for prevention, and then 1000mg daily, when an outbreak occurs. This regimine seems to work well so far.
