Babies: 3 - 6 Months

anyone switch from RTF to powder formula?

I think most of you on tonight BF, but I thought I'd ask anyway.  Abigail has been on RTF since a few weeks old.  I've recently been given a dozen cans of powder (we use alimentum so it's $$ and having issues with insurance paying).  I am scared to switch her.  Thoughts?

Re: anyone switch from RTF to powder formula?

  • I don't know anything about alimentum.  I use similac sensitive, in the powder form. I have a dr. brown's pitcher and I just make up a day's worth in there.  It blends it very well with no bubbles.  I have also used the concentrated form and have switched back and forth between that and the powder with no issues.  Good luck!

  • We attempted the same thing about a month ago. Tried switching from Alimentum RTF to powder. We bought the Dr. Brown's pitcher, mixed it beforehand and let it sit in the fridge so the bubbles could dissipate.

Ugh, it was a huge fail. DD's reflux flared up again, more spit-up, more fussiness. We are sticking to the RTF now.

Even if your LO doesn't tolerate the powder now, I'm sure it will still be good 3 months from now, and your LO might tolerate a switch bettern than. (Just in case it doesn't work out now.)

I am glad you answered.  This is exactly what I am scared of.  Maybe I will just wait another 3 months.  You are right, it isn't going to expire!

  • We switched from Alimentum RTF to powder right after his 2 month appointment because the pedi gave us a case of the powder. He did great with the switch and never had problems. We also do like Rochella does and just make individual bottles and shake like crazy. I found that it didn't mix well with a spoon and still had clumps. So we shake now.
