Cloth Diapers- where to start?

Hi guys-

What would you recommend as a 'starter kit' of sorts for cloth diapering? We're expecting our first in June and know we want to go the CD route, but are a bit lost as to how many to buy initially, of what sizes, preferred brands/types, what accessories... snappis and covers and pins, oh my! Just a bit overwhelmed and would love if someone could break it down for us.?

?Thanks in advance!?

  • Do a trial! Jilliansdrawers.com has CD trials and people love it.

We jumped right in and just picked prefolds/covers, and now I'm switching to fitteds/covers and a couple BG2.0's.

I wish we would have done the trial first.

  • I also did the jilliansdrawers trial and loved it.  I know a lot of ppl love kissaluvs for newborns and I think someplace does a rental for newborn size but I didn't start untl my dd was almost 5 months old so I don't know much about it.  Prefolds and covers are a great basic diaper and then I use aios and fitted when we go out and about and pockets at night.  I would also rec just reading the posts on here- tons of great info Smile

  • Modern Cloth Diapering | Sunshine Diapers is the place with the KL0 rental program if you want to go that route, but I think the trial might be more fun because you can play with different kinds.  You could also watch your local Craig's List or Diaper Swappers - Cloth Diaper & Parenting Community to see if you can get a great deal on gently used diapers.  That's what I did knowing I could later resell many of them for close to what I paid as long as I keep them in good shape.

And ditto PP, keep reading the info here.  I did that for a couple months and feel so much more confident.

  • And if you have a store near you or at least a close drive then you should definitely go and check it out.  It helps TREMENDOUSLY to see, touch and feel all the different types of diapers that are discussed around here regularly.
  • LClaire (one of our very own nesties) has done a beautiful job of creating an informational section about CDing on her site.  She is also fantastic to work with, and is a wealth of information regarding all things cloth.  Her tutorial has three sections.  The main page is:
