what do you think? nature or nurture?

I read this opinion article today and would love some opinions from my fellow bumpies. I myself allow C to watch the occasional episode of Bones or NCIS with me while I feed him or we play with toys, but we also watch NiHao Kai Lan, Miss Spider, Blues Clues, and Olivia. We also sit outside and watch the doggies play, get tummy and crawling time, and read books. I dont know that I would go out of my way for Baby Einstein and the like to improve his intelligence now, but I would nourish his hobbies so they can be more a part of what he does as an adult.

  • I think it's sad that the "expert" in this particular article seems to think that attachment parenting is such a meaningless chore and that those parents who aspire to be attentive, caring and available for their kids are wasting their time & energy because a TV is just as good as they are when it comes to raising children.

That said, I don't think TV is the devil. I just don't think it should be used as a substitute for attentive and interactive parenting.

It's not about trying to make your child smarter... it's about helping them learn and building a loving, relationship with them. That's what will make them better adults.

  • I agree with most of it, because I also don't think that you have to spend as much money on kids as a lot of people do these days.  The part I don't like is how he said that nurture is so minimal, especially giving the example of kids' intelligence being the same, no matter who their parents.  As a teacher, I've see where the parents have a huge impact on how well kids do in school.  I think genes only go so far.  But I definitely agree that parents don't need to spend all kinds of money overindulging their kids.  DH and I already agreed that our kids can do one extracurricular activity at a time... never more.  And if our kids want designer clothes when their teens, we'll set a budget for clothes and they can contribute their own money to get more expensive stuff.  And if they want cars, they have to go buy them themselves.  We will, on the other hand, help with college as much as we are able to.
