For all the whining people did about bumpers

We put together our crib last night.  We decided to register for a breathable bumper but not put it on until the baby starts moving around and we think we need it.  When I was in the shower DH decided to try it just to see how it looks.  It looks adorable!  It matches our crib perfectly and adds a very soft look.  So much so that we are just leaving it on now.

For all of the whining that people did saying how they were going to use regular bumpers because they just look too cute (despite the warnings of the risks) this amuses me greatly.  Rather than spend $119 on the bumper for our set and take the risk, the $29.99 actually looks best.

I swear I should post this on 1st Tri.

I say what I have to say once and stay out of all the drama. We have breathable bumpers too and got a color that compliments our sheets. Putting something on for the sake of cuteness over a LIFE...well.

  • Which one did you get? I ordered one, but haven't put it on yet. It is really cute too, but the colors in it don't match the picture. Thats ok though, not even my clothes match half the time anymore. LOL

  • Spending that much on bedding at all is completely ridiculous to me. I may make a breathable bumper as well. But I agree. I understand the need for bumpers but not one that can put your baby's life at risk.

  • It's possible to spend $119 on crib bumpers?

    holycrap.

  • Amen to that! My $30 breathable bumper perfectly coordinates her room..  no added health-risks needed, thankyouverymuch!
  • We had a little bit of trouble matching the colors as well.  We registered for the green but that shade was a bit darker in real life.  I found the ecru in the store and exchanged it.  The picture makes it look slightly peach-colored (because of the sheets) but it has more of a soft buttery color.

  • I bought a bedding set, but that is because I took the fabric from the bumper and made art for the wall, and it was only 40 bucks for the bumper, comforter, and sheet.  We have a white breathable on our crib and it looks just fine with the pink sheet, brown crib skirt, and comforter hanging on the wall.  We left the breathable bumper off with DS until we needed it,but after a night of his arms getting stuck in the slats three times we decided we would put it on right away.

  • I'm with you on the breathable bumper or none at all.  We got the white one, but I'm thinking of exchanging it for the green to add a little more color to that side of the room.

Question though, do you have to remove the breathable bumper in order to change the sheets?

No.  I actually just took the whole crib matress out of the crib and it didn't mess up the bumper at all.

  • Nope, the bumper velcros around the slats of the crib.  You should be able to remove your sheets no problem without removing the bumper.

  • I have both, I am debating about putting the matching one in his crib for now and then switching to breathable when he starts moving around....The breathable does match my set really nicely (I have the green one).

What a beautiful crib! I will have to look at those bumpers too. I got mine on sale for $15, but that one would probably match much better.

I don't get the point on spending so much on bedding either. Its almost impossible to find crib skirts that are not part of a set, really ugly, or expensive. I even tried finding fabric to make my own, but the fabric stores around here have horrible selection. I will probably just get some plain white cloth and make it myself though.

  • I spent $0 on all of  my crib bedding. My grandmother made the baby's blanket and pillow (to be used later) and my aunt bought a skirt, sheet and bumper to match. The bumper is a normal one, but I'm going to keep the baby in her bassinet for the first few months anyways. Right now its just in so that they can see it when they come visit when baby is born.

Just so you know, the non-breathable bumpers also reduce airflow to the crib, which increases the risk of SIDS. So the baby moving around and into the bumper isn't the only consideration. I also spent $0 on no bumper and will invest in a breathable one once I've noticed him getting stuck in the slats (if he does).

Ooh, please post pics! I was trying to figure out something to use the bumper for and that sounds like a great idea. I had no intention of using the bumper that came with my clearance set, but I put it in the crib to see how it looked, and I thought it looked really stupid because the crib slats covered up the cute pictures anyways. I will get a breathable one later if I find i need it.

Also, our birthing class instructor said that there is still an issue with bumpers and newborns who can't roll over because they can prevent proper oxygen from circulating on the low part of the crib where the baby's head is. Just thought I would mention it, because a lot of people on the boards seem to only mention the suffocation risk for babies that get caught under it, but it is a SIDs risk for all babies.

I have them, I use them, but seriously, they aren't cute. Oh and I paid $12 for mine at TJMaxx.

  • I think all bumpers are ugly...breathable, non-breathable.  I had a breathable for DS and it would scrunch down constantly.  It never looked nice.  I have nothing in the new baby's crib, but I'll get a breathable one if she starts getting limbs caught in the the slats. DS has nothing on his crib now and it's never been an issue.

I used my bumper to make cushions for my rocking chair. Just another way to use them.

I bought mine about a year ago but they were in the regular baby section. Mine has a HUGE baby section though. I have seen them there since, now and again.

before I put the breathable bumper into my DSs crib, I smashed it against my face and I had no trouble breathing.

I'm sure it's inevitable your baby will get stuck in the slats. I remember 2 times DS got his arm and leg stuck up high over the bumper. I can't imagine how many times he would've gotten it stuck if I didn't have protection.

Just FYI - this isn't installed in the crib properly and can be as much of as hazard when not used correctly.

Please elaborate on how this is incorrect? There should be no blanket in the crib but what is wrong with the bumper? I have mine in a mini-crib according to the exact instructions and it looks similar to this.

I wasn't the one who said it was wrong, but I had seen a youtube video previously explaining how to instal them safely. Basically, the problem with the picture above is that the bumper needs to wrap around the first slat beside the corner post on the sides too (like it does on the back of the crib in the pic). Not sure 'why' this is considered the safe way, but per the video that is how it is 'supposed to be' done. Also, the seams are supposed to be on the sides and not on the front/back (again no reason 'why').

  • probably because the baby could get its head under the bumper, but could feasibly do that at any point
