Non-wool dryer balls

This may be a totally silly question, but are non-wool dryer balls okay to use w/CDs? I already have these and was planning on using them but haven't taken them out of the package yet.  Does anyone have experience with them versus the wool?

Re: Non-wool dryer balls

  • I have those exact ones. They work great with my CDs.

  • Good to know! I thought I saw some similar ones on pinstripesandpolkadots.com so I assumed they were fine, but I hated to risk damaging my entire stash right out of the gate.

  • I bought mine from a cloth diaper store specifically to use with my cloth diapers.  I think you are ok.

We had them for a long time, but then I read how they actually fluff up your laundry and help drying time - the nubs that "massage" the clothes actually break up the fibers and bonds and cause them to wear down much faster.  Plus, they were insanely loud.  Occasionally they got caught in the sleeves of sweaters and would stretch them out and once they hit the dyer door so hard they popped it open. They were annoying.  I much prefer the wool ones - I feel like they're so much more gentle on your clothes.

This is my experience word for word.  Also I heard they give off really bad toxins and the nubs started breaking off of mine.  I stopped using mine a while back but have not had a chance to buy some wool ones, it is on my to do list.  This is off of the etsy page of the wool ones I am going to buy (CleanSypria)

"Q - How are these any better than the plastic (PVC) ones that I got from my local superstore?

A - They are VERY different actually! The conventional plastic ones you see on TV and in your local store are made from plastic and when heated can emit harmful smells that can irritate the lungs. They also do not speed up your drying time as my 100% wool dryer balls do. My dryer balls also do not make any extra noise unlike the plastic ones which sound like someone is trying to break into your house! Plastic dryer balls can also rip and tear some more delicate clothing as my dryer balls do not."

  • I use the plastic dryer balls with my inserts but not the pockets.
