Should I keep extending nap?

I have a 5 month old who takes a 45 minute nap 2 hours after waking up, another 30 minute nap about 1 and a half hours later and then about another 90 minutes later I will put him down for his long nap.  He, without fail, wakes up after 45 minutes.  I rock him back to sleep because this just coincidentally coincides with my older son's nap.  He then takes another catnap around 430.  Am I just being selfish by rocking him back to sleep?  I feel like he does need one large chunk of sleep.  DS1 was taking 2 solid 2  hour naps at this age and a catnap.

Also, how do I know when to change his schedule around, I feel like the naps should be consolidating eventually?  Thanks!

Re: Should I keep extending nap?

  • I think that is fine. At one point DD was only sleeping for 30-45 minutes at a time. I started putting her back to sleep when she would wake up and she has now gotten to 2  2 hour naps and a 45 minute nap in the evening. I think it helps them realize they can go back to sleep even if they wake up and it helps get them on a better routine. Also, more sleep in the day usually means more sleep at night, at least for DD it does.
