Baby Names

Malin

I saw this name on E News. Pronounced MAH-lin. Says it's the, "Latinate cognate of Magdalene (of Magdala, a town on the coast of the Sea of Galilee)." (From Baby Name Wizzard.)

What do you think?

Re: Malin

  • It makes me think of Lord of the Rings for some reason. Is there a Malin dwarf referenced at some point?
  • I tend to not like it for the simple reason that the root word Mal- means "bad"... Magdalene is lovely.

  • It's extremely popular in Scandinavia (Sweden in particular).  I know a ton of Malins and think it's a great name!

  • Oh yes, it is on Lord of the Rings, isn't it.

With the "mal" it's the same reason why I can't like Malory, because of the root word of bad.

I agree with both of you on those!

  • Mah-lin sounds like Merlin with speech impediment
  • Makes me think of her (only time I have really heard it).

  • I always thought it was pronounced May-lin so I guess I've always butchered the name!

I actually like it the way I pronounce it (haha), but Mah-lin sounds like being mauled for some reason :(

  • I like it.  I went to high school name Malin.  Also Marin, which I also like.

This! I only like it pronounced May-lin

  • I would consider it May-lin was an acceptable pronunciation, but I don't know that it is. I really like it.

  • Of course we all know Malin Akerman, even if we don't know her name. She's not a bad association or anything. She's just an actress worth mentioning that shares the name.

I personally don't like the name itself.

You say: "Hello. I'm Malin Kennedy."

I hear: "Hello. I'm maulin' Kennedy."

  • LOVE IT! It was on my long list.

  • I see it and think it'd rhyme with Palin, as in Sarah  and/or Bristol and for me that's not a positive association.

  • I posted this name a few weeks ago and everyone hated it.  I think I got like 25 responses, one said "meh" and everyone else ripped it.  :)

If we ended up with twin girls (possible since we're using fertility meds), this would probably be one of the names.  My H LOVES it and we are of Swedish background.

Yes, this. I think it was popular back when I was born. There were a lot of girls in my class with this name and I've got several friends named Malin. For this reason it seems a little dated to me. It's not a bad name though.
