For those who add rice cereal to to LO's bottle...

...how often do you add it? Every bottle? Just at night before bed?

And I know some people are against adding it to the bottle...so I ask you refrain from preaching. I put it in my LO's bottle...get over it!

  • When we did it we added to every bottle.  We didn't do it to extend sleep though, we did it because he was a puker.

  • We've been adding to her night bottle for about 5 days or so. I would definitely start out slow. We were on poop watch 2011 until about an hour ago b/c she hadn't pooped since early Sunday morning when she typically did 2x/day before we started her on the rice cereal. We were just adding 1 tablespoon to the bottle, but it really seemed to stop her up. And then BAM. Wasn't pretty folks.

    Have you tried oatmeal cereal??

  • I never stated that I did it to help LO sleep through the night.

Clearly those who have reflux issues would need it for every bottle.

My question was about the frequency. For those who have added rice cereal to their LO's everyday diet (not for reflux reasons)...guess I should have been more clear.

    ETA:

I should add that he's been on rice cereal since he was 3 and a half months old...I just add a little bit to every bottle...but my friend said she only adds it to one or two bottles a day...so I was wondering what everyone else did.

We're definitely trying that next after giving her poor little system a few days to rest!

I know that my DS got backed up from rice cereal.  When I talked to the Pedi they said that rice can do that and to try oatmeal.  And that I could also had fruit to their diet.  The switch to oatmeal did the trick though.

FWIW, our pedi suggested feeding cereal either by spoon OR in the bottle when first introducing it. We chose to feed with the spoon, but it's obviously not going to hurt your child to give it in the bottle if you'd be giving the same thing by spoon.

There are several people in my family with babies/toddlers that suggested I give A cereal in his bottle. I personally chose not to, but they started out doing it only at night, then slowly added more cereal bottle feedings. It ended up being pretty much half the time they'd get a cereal bottle.

  • I feed DS some cereal with apples in the morning and put a little in his bottle at night.  The rest of his bottles throughout the day are just formula - no cereal.
  • So who are you looking for advice from? If you are not adding it for reflux issues, or to help your LO sleep at night, then why are you adding it? Perhaps others who are adding it for the same reasons as you would be better able to share their experiences.
