2nd Trimester

When do you start counting/tracking movement?

REPOST for aug2011:

Our LO has been very very active since around 17 weeks. I would always feel her early in the morning on my way to work and then a few times throughout the day and then always a TON at night when laying down.

Since yesterday I havnt felt her move as much as she normally does. Should I be worried? Could something be wrong? When do you start tracking this sort of thing?

Re: When do you start counting/tracking movement?

  • My midwife told me to start tracking at my 24wk appt., I thought that was pretty early though since most girls post that they start around 28wks. So I think it's relative to your OB/midwife. I would guess anywhere between 24-28wks though.

Here's what my midwife says about movement- You should feel them after you eat, and especially at night when you are laying down, but they are establishing sleeping patterns now so don't panic if you don't feel any movement for several hours (the baby might be sleeping) You can try drinking some ice water or juice to see if baby wakes up.

  • Usually it's around 28 weeks. ETA: I wouldn't worry - it will probably pick up again soon. I started feeling this little one around 12 weeks but it's only in the last week or 2 that I feel her consistently every day and multiple times a day.

You don't have to kick count unless you haven't felt the baby move at all in a day

  • At about the same time as you are, I stopped feeling my LO for a while.  There's just so much room in there and your baby is still pretty small.  As far as kick counts go, my card says to start at 28 weeks.
  • When I was about 18-19 weeks I would definitely go a day or more straight without feeling the baby move. Sometimes they're moving but just not enough to bump into you, sometimes they're sleeping and sometimes mama is just too busy to pay close attention! Definitely don't stress, things sound totally normal!
