Baby Names

Esther

DH suggested this name last night and I'm really unsure how I feel about it.  I like that it's classic and has a great meaning.  But, I do think it's definitely on the more extreme side of the "granny chic" name trend going on (I love most of the old names that are coming back, BTW) but I think my concern is that this name just seems too "old", like I can't picture a sweet little baby or girl with this very grown up name.  And no real nn options are standing out to my PG brain right now.  General thoughts/opinions on this name?

Re: Esther

  • I agree with you that it sounds to old.

  • I really really dislike it. It sounds like a witch from a nursery rhyme of something. Plus, I used to work for an Esther who was a real piece of work. Maybe thats where I get the witch connection? lol

  • I really like Esther.

It was my grandmother's name and I love that it is coming back. My other grandmother was Nell so we went with Estelle to honor both with my DD's MN.

Esse could be a cute NN.

  • I grew up with an Esther.  She was the coolest kid on the block and grew into a confident, successful woman.  Love the name.

  • I personally like it.  It is "Granny-chic" and a real name as opposed to all the -ly/-lee/leigh, -lyn/-lin,-ayden,etc names.  I like Ess or Esse as NN but would probably just call my child by their whole name.

  • I think it is a very pretty name, and to be honest, once a child has the name it loses the "old" real quickly.  Some of my best friends growing up have "old" names (Virginia, Caroline, etc.) and I never once thought of them as old because young people have them.  By naming your child Esther, your helping bring it back in style!
  • I love Esther.  My great aunt is Esther, and she is amazing.  We would use it if DH didn't have an aunt with that name who was disliked by everyone in the family.  I think it's classic and beautiful.
  • Yes it is granny-chic.  But it isn't common like Sophia or Alice (which I like too, but I hear more than Esther).  I really like it.  I also like the nn Esthie.
  • I don't think of it as old. I went to HS with an Esther and I used to work with an Esther. I like it!

    I think it's great!
  • I think it's beautiful, but I am in full support of granny chic.

If you want great-granny chic, you could also consider Hester. Sure, it has the Scarlet Letter thing going on, but none of her peers will know that until high school, and I feel that literature-based teasing is probably the best teasing there is.

  • I think if you are on the fence about the name it will grow on you.  It is a classic and beautiful name and I like the nn Esse or Essie.  I think it would be a great strong name for when she's older too.
  • I love the name, but my wife doesn't.  She likes Eloise though so I am not going to fight her on Esther.
  • It's one of my absolute favorites. Always has been.

  • I think it sounds like an old lady; but then again so does Rose and that's going to be my daughter's middle name.

  • I love Esther.  I think it's sweet and cute and doesn't sound too "old" to me at all.  But I tend to like traditional, classic, timeless names.  *shrugs*

  • I love Esther. It is an old lady name, but I'm into that. I think it'd be refreshing to meet a little girl named Esther.

As far as the name being too "grown up"----there's no such thing. Your child is an adult for the vast majority of her life. It's unfair to stick someone with a cutesy name just because you can picture it on a baby. Though I can see how this would be a hard name to picture even on a young woman (I went to a private Christian college, so I knew a few Esthers my age, but generally, I can see where it'd be tough to imagine a 30-year-old with this name).

Personally, I think it's stupid to wrack your brain for nicknames for a name that's short as is, but if you're looking for something "cuter" to call an Esther when she's young, Essie immediately comes to mind. It's an old-school nickname that's almost never used now, but it would definitely be cute on a child.

  • I usually really like the older names but this is one that I am just not a fan of. That being said, something tells me it will definitely be coming back in style.

  • I know an Esther and she is 24 or 25.  I don't think old, I think biblical.  I think it is a cute name, I like it.

  • Hate hate hate it! ugh
  • It is growing on me. My Grandma is Esther and have debated using it as a middle name one day.

  • Love it. I would use it if DH liked it and it sounded good with our last name. It is old-fashioned, but I like that in a name. The main character from Meet Me in St. Louis is called Esther.

  • I actually like it alot. I don't think old lady when I hear it, I think of Queen Esther in the Bible who stood up for her people against her husband. She was courageous and strong, those are the things I think about when I hear this beautiful name.

  • I knew a girl named Esther who went by Tess (when she was little she pronounced her named Tesser.) If I ever named a daughter Esther, that would be the nn. I like Esther better than some of the other granny chic names... but what'evs

  • I really like it because it was my paternal grandmother's name, but I don't think I could/would ever use it because of the "old" sound to it.  However, approx. 6 months ago I thought the same thing about Charlotte and look how it's blown up now....

Though that movie was far from a classic and will soon be forgotten.

  • I'm not a fan, I'd be too concerned about the potential for name calling.  In my middle school there was a girl named Esther and she was called "Esther the molester".
  • I like this name but my wife LOVES this name but i also feel it is too old sounding

  • Love love love it! Unfortunately DH does not so it's off the list. If it were up to me though this would definitely be the name of our daughter.
