DH suggested this name last night and I'm really unsure how I feel about it. I like that it's classic and has a great meaning. But, I do think it's definitely on the more extreme side of the "granny chic" name trend going on (I love most of the old names that are coming back, BTW) but I think my concern is that this name just seems too "old", like I can't picture a sweet little baby or girl with this very grown up name. And no real nn options are standing out to my PG brain right now. General thoughts/opinions on this name?

I really like Esther.
It was my grandmother's name and I love that it is coming back. My other grandmother was Nell so we went with Estelle to honor both with my DD's MN.
Esse could be a cute NN.

PAL/PGAL Welcome
I think it's beautiful, but I am in full support of granny chic.
If you want great-granny chic, you could also consider Hester. Sure, it has the Scarlet Letter thing going on, but none of her peers will know that until high school, and I feel that literature-based teasing is probably the best teasing there is.

I love Esther. It is an old lady name, but I'm into that. I think it'd be refreshing to meet a little girl named Esther.
As far as the name being too "grown up"----there's no such thing. Your child is an adult for the vast majority of her life. It's unfair to stick someone with a cutesy name just because you can picture it on a baby. Though I can see how this would be a hard name to picture even on a young woman (I went to a private Christian college, so I knew a few Esthers my age, but generally, I can see where it'd be tough to imagine a 30-year-old with this name).
Personally, I think it's stupid to wrack your brain for nicknames for a name that's short as is, but if you're looking for something "cuter" to call an Esther when she's young, Essie immediately comes to mind. It's an old-school nickname that's almost never used now, but it would definitely be cute on a child.
Not a fan at all.

I actually like it, though I must say this is the first thing that came to my mind:
Though that movie was far from a classic and will soon be forgotten.
