Our showers are over so I'm ready to go to BRU/Target/wherever and buy all the little things that we're going to need to bring this baby home and care for her. Anyone have a good list of 'toiletries' that I need? Thinking about things like thermometers, diaper rash cream, cotton balls, rubbing alcohol, mylicon drops, shampoo, lotion, vaseline, nail clippers, etc.
I checked a few of my books, but didn't see a good list anywhere, so thought I'd ask my trusty moms instead!
Re: Infant 'toiletries'?
-Nail clippers and baby nail files (I had to use the files for a few months because the clippers nipped the skin right around the nail at first.)
-Baby tylenol--You may also want to pick up baby ibuprofen while you are at the store, but ibuprofen isn't recommended until past 6+ months.
-Baby wash
-Diaper rash cream (I love Boudreaux's Butt paste)
-Baby comb and brush
-Oral medicine syringe
-Baby lotion (I bought this and rarely used it, but I don't regret having it on hand just in case.)
-You may want to buy a thermometer, but the hospital sent us home with DD's thermometer. It won't hurt to have a spare around, though.
I'd buy small, even sample sizes of baby wash/shampoo and lotion. I have a closet full of J&J and Baby Magic (because I looooove the smell) that Luke can't use because of his uber sensitive skin. Same goes for the diaper rash cream. You never know what's going to work for your kid and what isn't.
Spring for the forehead scanning thermometer, but have a rectal handy in case your pedi asks for it when you call in (some do). But it's so much easier to swipe your LO's forehead in the middle of the night than to undress her and shove a thermometer up her butt.
I'd hold off on mylicon drops, gripe water, etc. I bought both and (thankfully) never needed them. If you do, that's what DH is for, right?
We've used:
Shampoo/Body wash (J&J makes an all over body wash, so that may be a good way to start)
Hair brush - I was shocked at how much hair DD had, so I was glad the hospital gave us one.
Nail clippers and nail files. Clipping those tiny nails is hard!
Body lotion - DD doesn't have sensitive skin, and I love lathering her up with lotion, and she enjoys the message.
Diaper rash cream - we didn't do well with the Butt Paste. Turns out Desitin worked best for us. Others have just the opposite experience. So maybe get small tubes of different brands, just as in shampoo, lotions, etc.
Gas drops. Gripe water worked best for us, gas drops didn't work at all. Like above, you may have just the opposite experience. Either way, I'd have one on hand. When I realized I needed it, I was too tired to go get some, and it was too late to call anyone.
Infant tylonal. Always a good thing to have at home. You will need it at some point!
Thermometer - Our hospital didn't give us one, so you may need one of these. Again, when you need it, you need it. Thankfully this one came up during the day and I called my Mom to bring one
Nose/throat sucker - we didn't use ours until DD got sick, so for us this wasn't something we needed right away. However, lots of babies are born with snotty noses.
Wipes, wipes, and more wipes.
I wouldn't/couldn't stock up on diapers right away. She was in newborn for a month, then 1s and 2s for just a couple weeks each. She's now in Costco's size 3s at only 3 months old! So if you're going to stock, do a box of each size maybe.
For you - nursing pads are your friend. As are witch hazel pads and regular pads in the beginning.
Oops, gotta go! Happy shopping
We used Mustela's no rinse wash first couple weeks before we could give baths. I love the smell and it came in handy later on as well when you had to do a quick sponge bath on the changing table (because of spills, spit-ups, etc).
Also get the suction bulb for the nose and perhaps the Little Noses spray. We started using that early on but it could've been the time of the year.
We got sent home with a TON of gauze squares and alcohol prep pads. So many that I ended up tossing a bunch of them.
They also gave us a tube of vaseline (DD's skin was peeling off and she got a terrible case of contact dermatitis right around her mouth/lower face).
Here is a list of what I have:
J&J Head to Toe Body Wash
J&J Original Body Lotion
brush and comb set
Pampers diapers are my favorite
Unscented baby wipes (we like Kirkland brand at Costco, great price on wipes)
Desitin diaper rash cream
nasal aspirator (you'll get one at the hospital)
Baby Simply Saline Nasal Mist (helps get buggers out with the nasal aspirator a little easier)
baby nail clippers and file (The file is easier to use at first and you don't have to worry about clipping the skin)
Vick's rectal thermometer
Exergen Temporal Scanner
Target brand gas drops (like Mylicon)
Once DD got a little older we got some Baby Tylenol, Kids Benadryl, Coppertone Water Babies SPF 50, Baby Orajel. We never used baby oil or baby powder.

Also get some medicine syringes, you can buy a pack of them. The droppers that medicine comes with suck and it is hard to get accurate doses with them. When you are at the hospital getting ready to leave, seriously swipe everything in your room at NAMC... I took all the Pampers diapers, alcohol swabs to clean her cord, the aspirator and thermometer they use is yours and they can't reuse them, and all the pads, sprays and wipes they give for your use too!
