Xbox 360 kinect or Wii?

DH and I are in a disagreement about which is better to get.  We are not big gamers at all, so I think the xbox is overkill.  DH thinks it will be easier for the kids to use b/c there are no controllers with the kinect.  They've played it at 2 different friends houses and I can't say it was any easier for them to understand than a Wii. They lost interest in it pretty quickly.

I see us mostly using it for familly game night, dance games, sports games, iSpy, but not a lot of hand held controller games, like mario cart or things like that.  My kids really aren't so into video games (they barely use the Leapster they have) and DS has attention issues to begin with so it's not something I want to really encourage.  I see us streaming internet movies, etc. to the TV through the Wii or Xbox more than anything (so again, another vote for the Wii which is much less expensive).

Any input?

We have both and I HATE the kinect.  We only have it because H plays xbox and a friend of his bought a new one that came with the Kinect.  He doesnt have kids nor have any interest in it so he gave (for free!!!) it to us for the kids.  Super sweet guy.

Anyways, we were all excited about it until we actually tried playing it a few times.  I hate the Animal game. Too complicated/boring.  We do have the Adventures game and it is pretty fun.  Those are the only ones we have so far.

Granted I think most of my hate for it and the Wii as well is the kids fight over whos turn it is all.the.time. UGH!!  So we dont play it often.

I havent checked out any games for the Kinect recently though.  They may have more that would be more fun.

My kids  LOVE Mario Cart on the Wii and all are pretty good at controlling it.

They both have pros and cons.  It depends on if you want them up being active (kinect) or kinda not (wii)  To me its a video game, I dont expect them to get exercise  out of it.  That is what riding bikes, running outside and going to the park is for.  I like the Wii the most I think because you have games where you are just sitting and then games where you are sorta active.

  • Everyone we know has the Wii so we have used it a lot.  We went with the Kinect and are happy we did (we weren't sure how it would be when we got it because we never tried it since it just came out).  We like it better and find it to be more fun. It is much better technology.  SIL/BIL have the Wii and the kids play Wii Fit running games sitting on the couch and shaking up the thing you hold, seems sort of lame IMO.  We have Sports and Adventures and they are fun for us as a family and when company comes over.  It gets you up and moving around and it's just really fun.  We also use the XBox for streaming video, netflix, etc.

One thing to keep in mind- you need plenty of space to move around and jump if you get the Kinect.  If you don't have the space, I would go with the Wii.

  • We have both and the wii has not been touched since we got the kinect. Granted, DH already had the xbox so we just had to buy the kinect sensor, but it is so much fun! We love the dance game and the adventures. It really is a workout! I'm sweating and out if breath by the time my turn is up. I love that it's so active and that you use your full body. I would totally go kinect over wii.

  • we have the kinect too, LoVe it! My parents got rid of their Wii and got a Kinect also.
  • We have a Wii and love it. I get a really good workout from it but we have a ton of games for it. The boys even like playing it.

I love the Wii Fit the most and when I was losing weight before I got pregnant this time it was great for keeping track of my weight and getting some exercise in too.

I played the Kinect at a friends house and although it was fun, it wasn't fun enough for me to want to go out and buy a new game system just to have it.

    Mommy to three adorable boys!
  • If you aren't really gamers, I would suggest the Kinect. It is really cool that your body is the controller! We have both systems and my kids love both. I really like the fact that I can play Adventures or Dance Central on the Kinect and feel like I got a good workout. My mom likes the Kinect because she hardly ever plays games and isn't good with remotes.
  • We have both and we are in love with the kinect! I think that it is so cool.

  • Hands Down Kinect!

    We all love it!

DD (3) loves the dance one!  She will clean the ENTIRE living room so she can dance!
