Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Happy to hysterical in less than 5 seconds.

I don't think DS knows how to fuss, he's either happy or crying his heart out.  I just put him in his crib for a few so I could go pee, and before he even touched the mattress, he was bawling.  Is there anything I can do about this?  I'm not willing to just make him cry.

  • Josie is like this too. I just put her down and do what I need to. I can't not pee because she's freaking out. If it were something optional sure, but I just can't be that much of a martyr to make sure she doesn't cry. This probably isn't the answer you were looking for. I do try and talk to her the whole time and the second I pick her up she stops immediately, so I don't think I'm doing any harm.

  • I do that too, but it's so frustrating.  I think I'm just getting really fed up with this sleep thing.  I love rocking him to sleep, but rocking him to sleep 10 times a night is getting a little old, especially when it can take up to 2 hours sometimes.

  • I have no advice because Charlie was the exact same today. I had to put him down to go to the washroom and he just WAILED. I just shouted his name and talked to him from the bathroom which seemed to distract him some, but otherwise I just let him scream until I finished going to the washroom. There was no alternative really.

Sorry you're having a hard time!

  • I wish I had a way to help you, I know I've said it before. Has the pedi given you any reason why this could happen? I hate to say it but if it were me and J were that old I might think about Ferber. If I had to constantly rock and sooth I would become frustrated and resentful. You are a saint.

This is what I'm worried about.  I already am frustrated, but I worry that I'm going to get resentful at some point.  I just don't think I'll be able to stick with Ferber.  I seriously can't listen to him cry - it makes me feel horrible.  I may not have an option though.  Something's got to give.  The pedi really has nothing to say at all.

Is there a way to do Ferber where I can rock/nurse him to sleep for the first time, but then do the progressive waiting for his wakings?

I dont see why not? It's not like you are baking and things need to be exact. I'm sure you can play around with it until it suits you. I think the biggest thing is to encourage him to self soothe. Does he have a lovey? I think a lovey has helped Josie tremendously. I wore it in my shirt a whole day and used it in between us while I nursed for a few days. Now she fondles it to go to sleep, before she would only sleep if I held her hand. SHe doesn't need it to sleep but I always find it next to her face and gripped in her hands so I know she's using it at night to play with.

You've got an ear and a shoulder!

He does have a lovey.  He'd carry it around all day if I let him.  t doesn't seem to help much though with the sleep issues.
