What is a maxi dress?

I apparently have no fashion sense because I have no idea what a maxi dress is. I googled, but what is the difference between a regular and maternity maxi dress? And the important question is, should I buy one? Are they good for hot weather? I live in TX where it is already been freaking almost 90*, and I am so.hot.all.the.time.

Re: What is a maxi dress?

  • it's full length, down to the ankles, made with breathable fabric... and lots of extra fabric usually to make it flowey...

here's a sample of old navy's maternity maxi dress

  • I'm a Texas girl too!  I was curious, so I looked it up.

Definitions of Maxi dress on the Web:

A '''''' is a floor or ankle length informal dress. Maxidresses are formfitting at the top and loose flowing at the bottom, cut to flow over the body. Usually made out of cotton or polyester. They come in a variety of necklines, colors and patterns.

I think the only difference between maternity and not would be slightly more material in the belly area.  I would think you'd be able to wear a non-maternity one though.

I'v been eying one at Target but have been to cheap to pull the plug.

  • Is it something a short person could get away with?? I am not even 5ft, and have a bust size of 34 H... I'm guessing I can not get away with it.Sad

  • I pretty much call any long dress (that goes to my feet/ankles) a maxi dress.

SO perfect for our warm weather right now. (except today it's kind of freakishly cold after the storm last night!!)

I bought two at Kohls this week, but they were around $40/each. I'm going to look at Ross/TJ Maxx and see what I can find there (hoping cheaper) . They're comfy, breathable, and flattering on my bump. I haven't been buying maternity ones and I like them a lot, plus I'll be able to wear them post-baby when we're melting trying to take a walk with our little ones! I'm sure the maternity ones are just cut a little differently, If you aren't liking the way nonmaternity ones fit I'd give some maternity ones a try. Old navy has a bunch online.

try them on and see! You can always hem them. I had trouble with them a lot of them pre-pregnancy because I'm 5'5 and they were mostly too long on me. The bump lifts them up to the perfect height :)

  • I'm also about 5'3, I have a hard time finding them when they are not too long. But I would so live in them otherwise.

  • Maxi dresses are amazing for hot weather, and they're SOOO comfy and non-restrictive. I have bunches. The weather is finally perking up, too, so I'm excited. I wear them even when I'm not pregnant, because of the comfy factor. I'll probably be wearing one home from the hospital. =)

You should be able to wear a non-maternity one. If you have a ROSS in your area, or something similar (Marshalls, TJ MAXX, etc.), I highly suggest looking there!

yeah, i'm 5'2" so most of these drag on the ground for me, or just look like a nightgown... but i don't plan on wearing them on major outings, maybe just to the grocery store

but i'm so tired of clothes and feeling uncomfortable in them now that they're perfect...

  • I think you could get away with it! The problem i run into with being shorter is they run very very long! I always end up getting mine altered!
