Baby Names

If you have a southern accent...

How do you pronounce names like Aidan, Caden, Braden etc.?

I mean, it's seems obvious that it would be pronounced Cay-den, lol. But here in the small town south, I hear a lot of "Cayd'n" and "Aid'n". Do you know what I mean? I don't know if it even matters that much, but I never know how all these kids (or their parents) prefer their name to be said.

Just to be clear- the names themselves are NMS. I'm just curious how others typically say them.

Re: If you have a southern accent...

  • Most people around me say it like "Ai'n"

    I pronounce everything so I say Ai-den.

  • I've been told I have a slight southern accent, and I would pronounce it Cay-den. But I don't think it's uncommon for southerners to shorten "n" or "ing" endings like "runnin'". I suspect with most names, there could be slight variations in pronunciation based on region?

  • My FIL's wife has a super strong southern accident and she would pronounce them as you showed. She pronounces DD's name Aw-bree and unnounciates every single letter and it makes me nuts lol. I dont say anything though because I dont want to offend her. I'm sure thats the way most parents feel. I doubt they want people to pronounce thier child's name funky but tolerate it if that is the way someone talks to avoid picking on the person.

  • This was one of the reasons Eden got nixed from our list with DD1. I say E-den, H says Eed'n. Then he said that sounds like "eatin'" and it just spiraled out of control from there :)

  • I honestly think it depends on what part of the South you're in!  One thing I noticed from being with DH (who's from the rural Florida panhandle, which is in the Deep South!) for the past 10 years is that there is a wiiiiide variety when it comes to Southern accents.  People around you in Tennessee may very well pronounce these names differently than people down here in the FL-AL-GA region, & differently again from people in the Carolinas & Virginia.

FWIW, I'm from Central New Jersey & don't have a stereotypical, thick "New Jersey" accent.  But people where I'm from would tend to abbreviate these names like you mentioned:  Aid-n, Cayd-n, Brayd-n.  Our state capitol is Trenton & most of us just say "Trent-n".  :)

This is an interesting post...I just love different accents!  :)

  • I pronounce them like you said, and didn't even realize it! We do leave out the 'e' sound. I'm from Mississippi.

  • This reminds me of my friend who named her son a unique name/ spelling when we were in college. The name is Daeun (pronounced Day-en) Tongue Tied

Anyway I was dating a southern guy at the time and he couldn't get over how bad the name was.  He said, "That's how we pronounce Dan in the South."  Still makes me laugh!

  • My grandmothers would both pronounce without the "d" sound. One's last name was Vaden and she said "Vay-en" and or just straight Vain if she really got rolling. I try to do better, but the d sound is hit or miss for me. ETA: From Mississippi and Tennessee.

  • I just said it out loud, and the 'd' got completely dropped.

    Like Ai'n.

I'm from Alabama and I pronounced them just like that. It all get squished together. I do not have a thick southern accent at all, but it's just enough that everything is a little "lazy" sounding.
