Stretch marks & tanning

I'm sure this has been asked before- does tanning make stretch marks appear worse or better?  I have really light ones on my belly- obviously cause my belly was like 10ft around by the time I delivered.  I am going to start tanning for a wedding & I certainly don't want them to look worse.  Who knows this answer?

Crap.  I was going to tan for my vacation so I don't burn and was wondering this myself.

  • My BFF has worked in a plastic surgeons office in Miami for 5 years now and does all sorts of laser treatments on people. She said that tanning won't effect stretch marks one way or the other, but she said for scars (if you had a c/s) to def. lube it up with a high spf sunscreen.

  • Weird, I was going to say yes. But my stretch marks were the old white ones, so maybe that's why?

  • McKenna, I went tanning for a month back in February and got a light base tan.  I thought the stretch marks I had seemed less apparent.  My skin tans very slowly though so I wasn't a huge different in my overall tone.  Don't know how they would look if my skin tanned darker.

I've gotten sprayed a few times- it just isn't the same.  I like to bake.

  • From what I have read and heard it depends.

It depends on your skin type. What color are your SM? Some are purple, red or just a shade lighter than your skin color. And it also depends on how long you have had your marks. If they are newer then tanning may make them worse.

Give them time to fade and maybe cover them up while you tan.

Mine are lighter than my natural skin color. I only have one dark one on my side.

I tan very easy and get dark quickly. I was thinking I should cover them up for like half the tanning session so they aren't exposed the whole time.

    Thanks for the responses ladies!!

this was my experience too. I think everyone would be different though since we all tan different and get different stretch marks. But mine always looked lighter.
  • I have them leftover from puberty and when I have a suntan, they are a little more noticeable. This is 20 years after puberty though and they are barely visible anymore.

I don't do the tanning bed- too many risks.

  • I have the lighter ones and I've been tanning since Feb. They actually seem less noticeable, although they may just be fading. But they're def not more noticeable. The first month, I covered them up with a towel when I tanned on my stomach but I don't now.

  • I have light colored stretch marks from years of being up and down with weight and when I was tanning it always made them less noticeable and mine "blended in" better.

I just started going again last week and it feels so good. I feel like a new person when I get out of it, they are so relaxing.

It's not an UO with me either!  I only tan when I've got a vacation to get ready for, but I totally enjoy it.  It's so warm and relaxing :)

  • I too miss tanning. My family has a history of skin cancer so I've decided to be pale for the rest of my life. Ugh. Bring on the spray and lotion tans!

i agree. i know there are risks, but there are risks in almost everything. i feel so much better when I have some color. Plusalso we go to the beach for DD's bday every summer and if I dont have some form of a base tan I burn like the pits of hell. So IMO its preventitive maintenance. right?

LOL! I wish I had an excuse, but the only one I have is that I enjoy wasting away my skin cells. :P

my thought is that DH spends ALL day golfing / drinking. That is a risk right? So WHEN he stops his madness, I will stop mine. (not that I have tanned in over a year but when I do go back I dont want no lip!)

Yep, that's how I justify it too! DH used to chew (ew), but now he is just on the nicotine gum. Anyways, whenever he was chewing, he would get mad at me for tanning. It wasn't even fair at all! I called him a hypocrite many a'times!

ahhh teh worm dirt ha-ha yeah my ex did that too but he knew better than to complain about my tanning. He also knew if I felt better about the way I looked it was going to be a benefit to him :)
