April 2011 Moms

probably a stupid question...

but I'm a first time mom.

I know we should bring a "coming home" outfit to the hospital, but should I bring anything else for the bean?  They'll have blankets to swaddle him right?  Do I need to bring any onesies or anything?

I'm putting together my hospital bag this week and one little outfit didn't seem like enough.

Re: probably a stupid question...

  • My hospital said all we'd need for LO was an outfit to take him home in (and in our case a blanket for over/in the carseat since it's our rainy season) and the carseat. They provide everything else while we're there, including little white t-shirts. I packed two outfits to bring him home in, in case he's big, a beanie hat and scratch mittens and a carseat blanket.

They do use disposable washcloths instead of wipes, and said if we don't want to use those we should bring our own wipes.

  • Since they don't take up much space, I threw in 2 receiving blankets, a few onesies, hats, and socks, as well as her 'coming home' outfit. Like you, I just wasn't sure...

  • You know I have no idea McGee, but for what it's worth, I'm packing two onesies, some socks, and a blanket just in case. :)

  • Check with you hospital- they usually provide them with onesies, hats, blankets, etc while they're there but every hospital is different.

  • I think it might vary based on your hospital, but ours told us just to bring an outfit for them to come home in and a blanket for the carseat if it's chilly. They told us they would have everything there for them other than that. I'm bring 2 going home outfits and a matching blanket for each. :)

  • If you want your baby to be in a special outfit for pictures, most hospitals have a photography service that comes around to take pictures.
  • Thanks! I think I'll pack an extra onesie and ask my doc at the next appt.

  • I just packed his coming home outfit and one hat that I'll probably have him wear in the hospital vs the generic pink/blue ones. I have a blanket with his carseat in case it's cold, which considering the recent weather, it probably will be. They don't allow babies in anything but their hospital issued shirt and blankets while they stay there.

  • My kids all end up with huge heads so I like to bring a hat meant for a slightly older baby. Also, don't forget your baby book! It's nice to have so you can write down your first impressions and have a nurse stamp little foot/hand prints in there. But other than that I didn't really need much else except for my favorite saddler (the ready-made kind with Velcro) & the nurses were cool with that.
