Formula Change Time??

Just wondering, how I know if the formula I'm feeding DS is right for him? I know a lot of moms have to change the formulas because their DC is sensitive to them --

DS is feeding Enfamil Lipil. Seems to be ok - but wayyyyy gassier today than before and fussy today. but, could just be a fussy day?? or is it the start of a problem?

I'd just hate to keep him on something thats bugging him - but dont' want to be an alarmist either. TIA!

Re: Formula Change Time??

  • Have you tried gas drops? We put them in all of DD's bottles until she was around 2 months.

Usually people switch formula because it either makes their DCs constipated or spit up a lot. If you aren't having those issues, then I would try the gas drops before changing anything else. It may be your bottles too.

  • I'd try the mylicon drops also and give it a few days. ?Call your pediatrician before you switch formulas though. ?If you switch around too much it could cause him more unneeded discomfort. ?And it sounds dumb, but make sure everyone who feeds him is holding the bottle at an angle so the nipple is full and that he is getting burped well with every feeding. ?With DS, we found at 2 weeks old that he was very gassy. ?We changed our bottles to the platex drop-ins and it solved the problem. ?We had been using the ready-to-feed 2 oz. bottles with the nipples from the hospital that just screw on, but I think he was getting too much air. ?So look into the bottle as a possible culprit too. ?HTH!

  • FWIW, we also switched to drop ins. They are very popular on these boards.

  • Hmm..to be honest, I never knew that switching bottles could be the solution. Now, I'm not sure that we actually have a problem, but I just see a change in things already and want to be prepared so that he's not suffering any longer than necessary if its the case.

    so, THANKS!!! :)

  • I could have written that post 3 days ago. It took a solid week and a half- maybe till she was 9 days old to show signs of Enfamil not working for her. She had clay poop and was completely fussy (still waiting to see on the fussiness). We switched yesterday to Gentlease and tonight she had normal poop!!!! That is a huge deal. We will see if she is less fussy tomorrow.

Trust your gut. I called the nurse line at the dr.'s office and they said not to change the formula. I said screw that.......not to them, but I went and changed it. I just KNEW something was wrong but could not pinpoint it.

    Good luck!!
