Banking Cord Blood

Hi Ladies,

I was wondering if anyone had looked into banking cord blood or had some good websites that provided information about choosing a company.  I had asked my doctor, but she basically said they are all the same and that they recommend just picking the cheapest one.

I'm looking for a bit more direction.  We have an appointment scheduled with a pediatrician at the end of April, but would really like to begin looking around for a company now.

 Thanks!

Re: Banking Cord Blood

  • They are basically the same. Make sure you go with a company that has been around for awhile. You don't want to pay all that money and then have it go out of buisness. I went with Cyrocell.

  • I used CBR for my DS and am using them again for this LO.  I did a lot of research and narrowed it down to a few and then chose the cheapest.  I had a good experience with CBR and I really enjoy getting their updates via email.  I love reading the stories about children who have used their cord blood.  (Makes me feel like I didn't waste my money)
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • My doctor recommended StemCyte
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Please just do research.  I was ALL FOR IT until I did my research.  After reading lots of publications about cord blood banking, I have come to the conclusion that it's really just a scam playing on the fears of parents.

FYI...donation is great if that is an option for you.  It goes to the greater good, and there is a high probability you will get your cord blood back should you need and are able to use it.  Which brings me to my next point...the majority of cases the cord blood is not even usable.

So, again...please just research.  CNN has some good articles.  Fit pregnancy has too.  Don't read stuff from the companies themselves--they will have you banking in a minute.

Also, you have to cut the cord pretty quickly in order to bank.  However, there are so many proven benefits from allowing the cord to stop pulsating before cutting--which would null and void the possibility of banking.
