Children's Bible or a Rosary are usually standard.
I got my first really nice rosary at my first communion. So did each of my children.
They also were given, crosses/Crusfix for their rooms, each got religious jewerly. Prayer book and picture frames.
Being that he's the godfather I'm sure you want to give something special. I would go w/ the really nice Rosary or cross necklace.
A birthstone rosary or cross necklace is always a super nice gift.
