Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I feel like an idiot when it comes to....

reading hunger signs! Sometimes it is so obvious that DD is hungry...she is smacking her lips, eating her fist, etc. But, other times it could be 3 hours since the last time she ate and there seem to be no signs. I still will feed her, but sometimes she will only take an ounce or two. I have been wasting a ton of formula lately because I always fill the bottle up 3-4 oz just in case.

In the middle of the night last night, she got up about every 2.5-3 hours. I always feed her each time she gets up. There were two times where she only ate an ounce (out of a 4oz bottle)! Just wondering if I am being premature in feeding her if she is not even hungry. Maybe I should wait a little while to see if she falls back to sleep???

What does everyone think?

  • when ds was that age...I would start with 2 oz of formula and then if he wanted more, I would get more then because I was also prepared for 4 oz and then he wouldn't want it and it would go to waste. too $$ for that lol

I would try to rock back to sleep at night and see if she will fall back to asleep, if she doesn't or start rooting then get a bottle.

how much does she eat before bed? ds tends to want more for his last bottle before bed...he usually eats 4 oz but at that time will eat up to 6-7 oz.

  • At that age my DD rarely at more than 3 oz, and that was a rare occasion. I would only make 2 oz that way you aren't wasting so much. If she is still hungry, then you can always make more.

  • My baby eats 3 oz at a time, but he is always very hungry at feedings and makes it very obvious that he is hungry (roots like crazy).  If I were you, I would try 2-3 oz for awhile.
