onsies - your thoughts

I have a friend who told me she hates to see babies in just onsies without pants b.c it says "low class" to her. I had never even thought that and I think babies in little snapsuits are cute! Maybe my taste is low rent? Stick out tongue

What do you think? Is it trashy to take a baby out in a onsie with no pants?

Re: onsies - your thoughts

  • I never took DD out in just a onesie, but she was born in Jan, so by the time it would be weather appropriate I had her in super cute little outfits. I don't think it's lower class though!

  • What do I think?  What a b-tch.

I think onsies are adorable. I wouldn't really take the baby "out" wearing just that though.

  • I think it's adorable! Who wouldn't want to see some cute, chubby baby legs?

  • Ha! What? I don't think it's a big deal for a baby to be in just a onsie, especially in the summer.
  • I think your friend sounds snobby!  I will have a little baby in the California desert this summer, and baby will probably rock onsies all the time.  What's the point of awkward baby shorts?  If I have a DD, I don't think she needs to be in dresses all the time.  Pants might be too hot.

  • I don't think it's low-class at all.  In fact, I think it looks tacky to put a baby in a onesie and then put pants over it.  But then, I am not a fan of tucked-in shirts, lol, so that could be why.  At any rate, I actually prefer babies in little t-shirts and just a diaper (especially cute cloth dipes!), or t-shirt, diaper, and babylegs.  I think it's cute as all get-out to see their adorable bums, belly buttons, chubby legs, and little feet.

Edit:  If I were in public, I'd probably toss an actual onesie and babylegs onto my baby, but I still wouldn't put shorts or pants over the onesie, lol.

  • DD was always in Onesies and babylegs in the beginning. She so tiny taht nothing fit her right so we kept it simple till she grew into 0-3
  • Well, considering it will be about 100 degrees here in July/August, it's very doubtful that we'll be putting pants on our newborn.
  • Considering the extreme August heat and the fact that it will be easier to have to change LO in public without peeling pants off, we'll be going the onesie/ onesie plus babylegs route. She can put her kid in tons of clothes this summer, but I'll be going for comfort and convenience.

  • Before DS was crawling, I took him out like that--especially on errands where he just stayed in his carseat. I usually made sure he had a little pair of socks on though =D

  • Honestly my first thought was, yes, I think it's kind of "low class." Then I thought about it more and honestly I think it's more the germ phobe in me that thinks it's icky for bare baby legs to be in a shopping cart seat or something! lol. But I guess I understand it in the summer.

  • DD was in just a onesie all the time at home, but when we went out I'd throw a pair of pants or a little skirt on her. I don't think it looks "low class", I just think it looks unfinished. I never felt like her outfit was complete without something else over the onesie.

That's what carriers and those shopping cart inserts are for! Haha I wouldn't be putting baby all over a sticky shopping cart seat either, but hopefully that won't be the case too often between strollers, the Ergo, and the like.

  • Okay, I tend to be kind of snobby from time to time but this seems ridiculous! I think it's perfectly fine (and even adorable) to have a baby in just a onesie, especially in the August heat!

You'd better believe this is on my registry! *shudders*

I also thought about those icky changing table things in public bathrooms the other day and was so skeeved out.

  • I prefer something over them, too, but it has nothing to do with class... I just think it's more comfortable for baby.  But who cares what it looks like?

I can't WAIT to put the baby in cute onesies that say fun stuff.  Yay!

  • I never took him "out" in one just because I prefer outfits, even on newborns. FWIW I never took him out in sleepers unless we were going out to dinner and would get back just in time to put him to bed. However, around the house, especially because he was born in August, he wore them like crazy. There is nothing wrong with onesies. I wouldn't call them classless or whatever your friend said, they just weren't my style for when we were going out.

  • My DD was born May 31 duing a VERY early, hot summer.  We took her out in just onesies in like July/August.  I'd put a white one on first and a cute print one on top.  I thought she looked like a cute summer baby.  She's almost two now and I would NEVER let her leave the house in just a onesie anymore.  She's past the age when it's "okay", in my opinion.

  • Yikes! I hope she doesn't ever see babies running around in just a diaper! lol

While I doubt I'd take a kid out in a pant-less onesie,  it doesn't bother me at all.

  • My son was born in May in Phoenix.  It is darn hot, and onesies are comfy and cute. I have NO problem with my child wearing just a onesie, as long as it is weather appropriate.  Onesies were my FAVORITE thing for DS to wear... I think most baby clothes look terribly uncomfortable on babies during the first few months until they start moving/sitting/crawling.
  • I had my daughter in September and in DC we have awful, muggy, super hot and humid days. She was in a onesie all the time, and I would have felt sorry for my LO if I put her in any more clothes. I think it's 'low class' and let me add 'stupid' to overheat your poor baby....
