I want to switch DS to a high back seat belt positioning booster for my mom because she seems to just not get it with a car seat. DS is finally over 30 lbs, so he's ready. Any recommendations?
If your DS is not even 2 yet, no WAY would I put him in a booster. A high back booster is less safe than a car seat. Considerably. Check out this YouTube video of a child in a booster and a child in a harness during a crash test.
Also this is a recent post by a dad on a car seat board I frequent...his grandson at 18 months and 34 pounds was forward-facing in a crash, and suffered internal decapitation.
I know it is parental choice about RFing or FFing at the age your son
is, but I encourage RFing. And if you choose not to keep him RFing then
PLEASE at least keep him in a 5-point harness.
4 years and 40 pounds is the minimum recommended age for a booster seat. The child needs to be able to sit up and sit still the entire time the car is moving. I can't imagine a child who's not yet 2 doing that. If they move, the seatbelt moves, and they are less secure.
What does your mom "not get" with the car seat? Maybe I can help with that? (I'm a CPS advocate)
