Bedding dilemma- Bumper vs. Breathable bumper?

I was looking at a post a few down from this and saw that so many of you are posting the bedding sets that you are purchasing.  I'm having a dilemma about the whole bedding set thing.  They tend to be fairly pricey, and while I LOVE the way the bumper/sheets/dust ruffle/ quilt look together, it seems silly for me to buy an entire set if all that I would use is the sheet and dust ruffle.  We are going to be using a breathable bumper, and I feel like the quilt never really gets used anyway.

Is there any place out there where you can just purchase crib dust ruffles & sheet combos?!   Any girls out there who are doing something similar?

  • I think most places let you choose which elements you want?...I'm only planning to buy a couple crib sheets, and I'll probably make the crib skirt out of a patterned fabric I'm also using for curtains, then buy a breathable bumper in a neutral/matching color to those elements.  I think it's more common these days for people to skip buying the fancy bumper and quilt.

This is such a great idea.  I was looking at fabric the other day for valences, so I might do that.  Thank you for posting that!

No problem!  Here's a tutorial that I'm planning to use since I'm not much of a seamstress (sounds like you're probably much more capable though!)...maybe this will help someone though :)

This is exactly what I did.  I bought fabric, and made really simple curtains and a crib skirt out of it.  I didn't even use a sewing machine, just the fusable webbing that you iron.

  • Pottery Barn Kids lets you buy pieces and parts of things, which is one of the reasons why we went with them even though they were a bit pricey.  We didn't want to buy a bunch of stuff that we weren't going to use.  That and the fact that we found some old gift cards that we wanted to use!

  • also check out serena and lily nursery basics, lots of fun sheets you can mix and match!
  • I'm totally mix matching. I'm not even getting a dust ruffle. Just a breathable bumper and a few sheets. I already have a pretty valance to use and there's no point to me in getting a huge set that's expensive when they're used so little. Some people just spend money unnecessarily I think.
  • Ohhhh I love the tutorial on how to make the crib skirt! I love it!!!!!  I think that is exactly what I'll do! I'm an art teacher, so I *think* I should be able to swing whipping one of those up! And, I love the idea of maching that fabric to the curtain or valance fabric! NOW- where to find good fabric!! :-)

  • You're right, the quilt never gets used. You'll save yourself a ton on just the sheet and dust ruffle. We ended up even taking off the dust ruffle because our crib has a drawer across the bottom and it was getting in the way.

  • We plan on piecing things together too.  I know Target is another place that sells just the pieces and not the set.
