Natural Birth

Percocet during childbirth

I am with a midwife who is very pro natural childbirth, but when I was questioning her about alternatives to an epidural should the pain be more than I could handle. She said that at a birth she attended a few months before that they had given the woman 2 percocets to help her deal with the contractions to get her to the point of pushing (she said at that point they did nothing).  Has anyone ever heard of this or had any experience with it or anything similar?

Re: Percocet during childbirth

  • i would think 2 percocets would have very little benefit during labor and i have never personally seen that used (i am an anesthesiologist).  iv narcotics are most commonly used as alternatives to epidurals.

  • Was this at a home birth? I guess there it could be an option since they can't give IM narcotics. In a hospital you would usually get IM or IV narcotics like Stadol.

No she said it was at the hospital she practices out of, idk I had never heard of it, but I like the option if it's available just to get me by if it gets out of hand.  The epidural and IV terrify me.

I dont like the idea of giving a couple percoset- at least with an IV you can turn it off if you have bad effects from it- with a pill you just have to wait for it to wear off. Sad

Dont concentrate on what you can get for pain- focus on working through your labor on your own and using different coping methods.

  • I had Nubain with my first...it really helped me. The IV wasn't a big deal to me (I was induced anyway), much better than winding up with an epidural.
