I can't believe it has almost been two weeks sincehe was born! I feel like I spend my whole day just staring at him and can't believe how fast time seems to be passing. I had posted previously that I was diagnosed with pre-e on 3/10 and the dr. decided Jack would be born at 37 weeks on 3/16.
We were scheduled to be at the hospital for 3pm with the c-section taking place at 5pm. I complained all night about what a long day it would be, but my husband reassured me everything would be okay because we still had bags to pack and a car seat to install. The next morning the doctor called at 7:30am asking us to come in asap because there was an opening in the OR and he would be able to take us in sooner.
This definitely through us into a frantic tailspin. I quickly jumped in the shower, threw some things into a bag, and we were off to the hospital. We checked into the hospital around 9:30am, filled out some paperwork, and were taken back to be prepped for surgery. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it all seemed to be happening really fast.
After they had me change, inserted my IV, and took my blood pressure, they were wheeling me down to the OR. While my husband waited outside, they explained all the equipment and went over the surgery one last time. I couldn't get over how much smaller the OR looked than what I had imagined. They sat me up, gave me the spinal, and laid me back down. I couldn't believe how quick it was getting it in and then how quickly it worked. My whole lower half got warm immediately. Once I was situated (my arms were not tied down) they placed the catheter and began the surgery, without me even noticing. My husband came in and sat by my head and we starting talking to each other, my OB and the anesthesiologist about our March Madness brackets. At this point, I still hadn't realized they had even begun. Five minutes later, my OB said "Stand up Dad," and at exactly 11:00am Jackson Scott was born weighing exactly 7 pounds and measuring 19 and 3/4 inches. I couldn't believe how fast the whole thing went. After he was cleaned off my husband came and sat by my head so I could see him and touch him.
After a few minutes they decided to take him to the nursery because he was looking a little dusky and they thought he was having trouble transitioning. He ended up with a 7 day NICU stay while they treated him with antibiotics due to an abnormal chest xray. The NICU dr's said it was most likely fluid that had not been squeezed out due to not having a vaginal birth, but it could be pneumonia and they wanted to air on the side of caution. The chief of staff in the NICU came in daily and teased us about having the healthiest baby in the NICU. The experience alone made us count our blessings.
Recovery has been amazing. I think being separated from Jack by 2 floors and 2 hallways definitely helped to speed up my recovery. I was out of bed and walking moving to a wheelchair by 8pm to go see him and walked to the bathroom at 2am that morning. My catheter was out by 5am and by 9am the next morning I walked (slowly and pushing a wheelchair to be safe) down to the NICU. I even showered alone that day. I know a c-section is a major surgery and everyone has a different experience, but mine was wonderful.
Can't wait to see everyone's babies!
