if you have pcos

If you didn't get AF on your own, did your dr give you anything to make it come back? I have my annual exam tomorrow and AF is nowhere to be found. My MW mentioned giving me provera if it hadn't come back on it's own yet.

Just curious what others are doing.

I may or may not have PCOS... We were in the process of diagnosing it when I got a BFP.  But I have a lot of the symptoms of PCOS.  And my period hasn't come back.  (I BF and am not on any BC right now either.)  My annual isn't until the end of April, but I'm kind of hoping that it doesn't come back right away... I mean, some women who BF can not have AF return for a full year regardless of if they have PCOS or not.  I guess I'll talk to my OB/GYN about this at my annual, and maybe get a Rx for provara but not take it until maybe when Lulu is around 9 months.  Who knows, maybe AF will have returned on her own.  But I'm definitely not going to force her to make an early appearance right now.

I wouldn't want her back either, but I'm not bfing or pumping anymore at all and so I'm thinking it's the PCOS that's preventing her comeback. My MW explained that a lack of periods (less than 4 a year) can increase the chances of endometrial cancer, so that makes me a little more anxious to at least get on a regular cycle, plus treating the pcos with metformin won't start until I get AF again.

Gotchya.  I would want to have AF visit me too if I was in your situation.  Have you taken Provara before?  I had to last year (before I got pregnant) because I had been off BC for 6 months and while I definitely wasn't pregnant, I hadn't gotten my period yet.

No I haven't, so I'm kind of nervous about it. Did you have any side effects? I was beginning testing too when I got my bfp. I was diagnosed with insulin resistance and prescribed metformin, but I was in the 2ww so never started it. During my c/s, my OB said "wow, you have big ovaries!" and then proceeded to tell me how to treat my pcos, which I promptly forgot because, well, duh! I just gave birth!! That's why I switched back to my MW.

  • Mind if I jump in?  I took Metformin for a little bit before I got pregnant with DD, then I stopped taking it in my second trimester.  I started it again when she was 10 months old (I was EBF and I had gotten one AF at 4 months pp and another one at 10 months), and within 3 weeks I had ovulated.  That was totally unexpected for me, because I have never really ovualted on my own.

We were using fertility meds when we got pregnant with DD.  The cycle that I ovulated when DD was 10 months old happened to be the one that we conceived DS.  So we were a little surprised.  This time I just kept taking the Metformin and I still don't have AF.  But I am also EBF again.

  • I went back on the pill and metformin to get it to come back. I decided I was ok with using the pill to regulate it since my milk had spontaneously dried up when DD was 2 months and we were adament on not wanting to get pregnant again until she is at least a year old. I went back on the met to help me lose weight, it really seems to be helping as I'm now 4lbs below my pre pregnancy weight.

  • I have PCOS - along with other issues.  I have not had a PP AF- which I would be lying if I said I missed it.

I took provera in the past- and have had a endometrial biopsy (this is not a fun procedure). Provera worked for me, unfortunately I had not had AF in over a year and let me tell you I thought I was hemorraging.

I have my annual in 2 weeks- I hope to be weaned off the pump by then so I will have a discussion about my PCOS and my Pituitary tumor.
