What are you reading?

After reading all of my baby materials, I wanted to start a book just for fun.  I just started reading Night Road by Kristin Hannah and I can barely put it down.  Just wondering if anyone has read anything good lately that isn't baby related.

Re: What are you reading?

  • The Millenium Trilogy - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.  I read really fast but they're pretty long, it took me a few weeks and I loved them!

I'm anxiously waiting for Janet Evanovich to release the next Stephanie Plum book, and for Charlaine Harris to release the next Sookie Stackhouse book.  Stephen King has a great series (The Dark Tower) and has a new, in-between book coming out soon, but by the time any of those come out I think LO will be here and I may not get the relaxing reading time I've enjoyed over the last few months :)

  • I'm reading Homicide: A Year on The Killing Streets right now. I read Sh*t My Dad Says a few weeks ago, it was so funny I laughed so hard I cried through most of it.

If I had read that pregnant, I would have probably peed on myself several times.  I read "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell", and while much more rauncy and guy-centered, it was equally if not more hilarious.  Also, Chelsea Handler's books - that b*tch is funny!!

  • Jodie Picoult- Keeping Faith, and then I hope to start her brand new one - House Rules. also someone just bought me Eat, Pray, Love but i watched the movei so I dunno if I'll end up reading it

I read this & felt so guilty for being a woman & finding it hilarious. He has a second book (A**holes Finish First) that I have on my Kindle wishlist but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I'll have to check out Chelsea Handler's books.

I love Jodi Piccoult. I have read both of those (well I have read almost all of hers). I think there is actually a newer one than House Rules, but I don't remember what it is.

The newest Jodi Picoult is called Sing Me Home.  I have yet to read it, but it's on my list!

she's my fav author as well! I'l have to put these on my wish list and hope I can get through at least 2 of them before baby arrives! I have 3 left to read of hers I think: Songs of the humpback whale, house rules and the new one you just told me about! I better get busy!

  • I've been reading IT by Stephen King, but have stalled at page 300.  I forgot why I have a hard time reading SK-all the backstory is driving me nuts.  I can listen to him just fine, but reading it myself has been hard.

I just started reading EXPLOITING MY BABY by Theresa Strausser (from the Adam Carolla show).  It is baby realted, but it's really funny.  I've finished half the book is about 3 days.

I also picked up IN THE WOODS.  I've heard really good things about it, so I'm really excited to start it.

  • **SING YOU HOME-WARNING/SEMI-SPOILER***

not to ruin anyone's read, but if you are planning to read sing you home the first chapter or so deals with some very sad/painful events that i would not have voluntarily chosen to read being pregnant. it was an excellent book, but for anyone who is easily shaken or worried, it may be best to wait until after delivery.

I don't think I could read any of Jodi Picoult's books again while pregnant.  They deal with such tough topics (one of the saddest ones dealt with OI, which reminds me of baby Noah).  Great books, but always something sad!

  • I just read Room by Emma Donahue (actually, I think her name is spelled differently than that, but I'm too lazy to google it right now). It was great - through provoking enough, but not too serious.

I almost pitched Handle with Care (the one dealing with OI) across the room several times, but especially after I finished it. I love her books, but her endings get to me sometimes.

So you know my taste - I also love the Sookie Stackhouse books and Janet Evanovich (who has just written a new book called Wicked Appetite featuring Deisel from the Plum series).  I always know I will enjoy anything by JD Robb/Nora Roberts.

I have a few suggestions ladies...

    - Roses by Leila Meacham (kind of an epic like Gone With the Wind, which I also loved reading)

    - Passage by Justin Cronin (sci-fi and kinda strange and scary, but soo good)

    - The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

I just finished Sean Griswold's Head, a super cute YA by Lindsey Leavitt and am now reading Blood Promise which is a book in the Vampire Academy series.  My tired baby-focused brain can only handle light and fluffy YA right now, but the stuff I'm reading is fun and keeping my attention!

Another rec is the Bride Quartet series by Nora Roberts - it was really fun to forget the baby stuff and dig back into the fun of wedding planning for a while.

  • I just finished Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. I've been debating trying to squeeze in one more Harry Potter reread before baby gets here.

  • I'm just finishing up In Country by Bobbie Ann Mason. It was published in 1985, and is about different generations of a family on a family trip to visit the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial. I LOVE it. It was made into a movie, but you have to read the book. I get compared to a lot of famous writers, but I secretly hope that someone out there thinks I write like Bobbie Ann Mason.

Poetry-wise, I'm finishing up reading No Loneliness by Temple Cone. I just published three of his poems here:

    https://contrarymagazine.com/

I fell so in love with his poetry, we did a book-trade for each others' books.

The other stuff I've read this week isn't published yet. I was editing it for the authors or writing the blurbs for the back covers of the books :-)

I LOVE Emma Donoghue. She's on the cover of the latest Writers Digest. I'm glad you're reading her :-)

  • Last winter, I read the Outlander series, by Diana Gabaldon, and could not put it down.  I'm re-reading them now, but a lot more slowly, because I have a lot more going on now.

I also just finished an advance copy of Okay For Now, a young adult book by Gary Schmidt.  It comes out next month, and I highly recommend it.  It's a sort-of-sequel to his previous book, Wednesday Wars, which was a Newbery Honor book.  I didn't read Wednesday Wars, though, and didn't even know that they were related 'til after the fact.

I've been hoping to find a series to really suck me in, the way Harry Potter and the Outlander series did, but so far, no luck. Maybe I'll just keep re-reading both series!

  • Read Water for Elephants and absolutely loved it! Reading a novel called We Hear the Dead by Diane Saleri. I bought it for my student library, but ended up taking it home and loving it. Mid-nineteenth century setting, two sisters pretend to communicate with the dead in spirit circles creating a massive hoax that spreads like crazy. Really fun and enjoying it right now! Totally a nice break from What to Expect When You're Expecting.

I just finished the last in the Bride Quartet (took the 1st one on our destination wedding trip!)

Your mention of YA books made me remember the book Dairy Queen and The Off Season by Catherine Gilbert Murdock.

And someone mentioned Water For Elephants by Sara Guren.  Another book of hers called Ape House is a wonderful story, but very different from Water for Elephants.
