Want to offer an opinion on our boy name?

If this is a boy he'll be John Adam LastName, III after DH/FIL.

(I know lots aren't fans of legacy names, but this is what we are going with).

We aren't sure what to call the kid though!

John (FIL goes by this and there are also literally 4 other Johns in the family)

Adam (DH goes by this and doesn't want 2 in the same household)

Jack (I like it but wayyyyyy too popular for me right now)

Jay (as a nickname for John)

Trip (A nickname for the Third as in Triple - I like this but don't want anything overly trendy)

Trey/Trace (also nicknames for the Third but we aren't crazy about either)

John Adam (not sure about using a double name for a boy....)

Anybody have thoughts/strong opinions on this? DH's fav these days seems to be Jay, which I like, but I think I would rather call him Adam or maybe Trip......

Thanks!

(ETA - I have been asked why we didn't name DS this - he is named after DH's best friend who passed away)

  • I would just call him John.  I am not a fan of calling people by their middle names or other made up names.

  • with there being so many johns in the family already, i understand the need for a nickname to avoid confusion. two of my brothers got family names so they always called my brothers a variation of their names. i am partial to jay. dh's bedt friend's given name is jonathan and everyone calls him jay.

  • I like Jay.

I also don't think it's too crazy to go with John Adam. I went to school with a John Ryan. If someone were to refer to him as John, I wouldn't have a clue who they were talking about because Ryan was such a part of his name to me.

  • i'll vote for jack or jay.

i don't care for trip.  trace seems like a nickname for tracy, so i would shy away from that one.  for some reason, trey doesn't seem to be jiving with me as a nickname this morning, although i do have a friend who is called eli as a nickname for being the 11th.

  • I like family names (our son's name will be a family name); I would call him John.

  • I would go with John. I don't understand the nn Jack for it. They're both 4 letters, aren't nn's typically to shorten a first name? Or how about JT for John iii? Dh and I are considering III for our son too but still not certain.

  • We have lots of Johns in my big Italian family, and plenty of Jrs and stuff too. I like Jay or Jack best in your situation. One of our Johns is called JJ but his middle name is Joseph, could also work for a John Jr.

I don't like Trey, Trace or Trip that much.

  • Jay makes sense to me because it's like a combination of the J in John and the A in Adam.  I also love Jack.

  • I vote Jay, but I'm a little biased.

MH was born "John" but called "Jay" for the same reasons you mentioned (it's his father's name and there were already a couple of other John's in the family).  Although I will caution you that everyone thinks that Jay is short for Jason.

  • I don't like Jay for John, I think of Jay being for Jason or James because those 2 names start with the Jay sound and John does not.  My FI is a John, one of many in his family and his middle is Lloyd, again, one of many in his family.  So since he was the youngest John he was called Johnny.  I think that is a better fit.

yeah, I think adding in names that aren't his is NMS I can see just "J" for John ...but not making it into an actual name (Jay)...and Trip is an actual name. I think just throwing it in as a NN is a little wierd. Of course I'm not a big fan of NN's to begin with so...

  • johnny?

    How about AJ (Adam jr?)

  • What is the first initial of your last name? Is it possible to call him by his initials, like JT, JD, JC, ec?
  • I hate legacy names, but it was agreed upon that we would have Michael Scott III (before we were even married). We are going with Trey. My MIL insists that MH is Michael and my FIL is Mike, despite the fact that my husband has always been Mike to me and has suggested that we call the baby "Mickey" no, I'm not joking. I like Trey OK, but hope baby number 2 is a boy so I can pick my own flipping name. In your case though, I love Jay.

  • My son is being named after my FI, his grandpa, and his great grandpa so he'll be a IV. His name is James Anthony G________; my FI goes by Jimmy so I don't want 2 Jimmy's and I never pictured having a son named James so we are calling him Jagger since his initials are JAG. Is the first letter of your last name something that would work the same way?

  • My DH is a John Jr too, so I've put some thought into this already. Not sure if you left it off the list for a reason but I really like Johnny as a nickname for John. Maybe you could also do JJ for John Junior...even though he's a third..so  maybe that doesn't really make sense.

  • I like Jay, and Jack and also JJ.  We have a JJ in my family.

Or how about JT for John iii?

i have a friend whose father was the third john and he was called J3 by family - "jay three"

my friend's brother, the fourth john, is known in the family as 'john four" (which i think is actually kind of catchy.
