Newborn Sunscreen?

I was looking at Target and I found all kinds of sunscreen there and I started thinking about how to be safe I like the idea of putting sunscreen on my baby since he will be born in August on top of being covered. But when I would look at all of the sunscreens they all said that for children 6 months and younger should consult a doctor.

Anyone know of any sunscreen made for children under 6 months?

  • Start having baby wear a hat everytime you go outside starting from the beginning.  This will make it easier in the winter to keep beanies on the little one and hats on next summer when baby will be grabbing anything and everything.  My friend's sons always always always wore hats out when they were little and now they never fight having a hat on in the sun.

Nope, you're supposed to wait until 6 months.  Just keep the infant out of the sun-always under an umbrella, inside, etc.

    this.

  • Wow, I have two kids and I never knew this.  They were both born in the winter though, so I guess I didn't had to worry about it.  I'm going to check the bottle for my all natural sunscreen and see if it says 6months also.

  • I use California Baby - and I used it on my son when he was 2mos old.  Our pedi said it's safer to use the sunscreen than let the baby burn if you have to be in the sun.

IIRC, you should be looking for one that's a physical blocker ( sunblock)  rather then a chemical one.

this. We took DD to our state fair when she was 3 weeks old. Our pedi said the risk of a reaction to the sunscreen was less of a risk than the sun exposure, so just use something more natural (and not copper babies, etc).

    Yep, this.

Once DD #1 had hit the 6 month mark, I used Neutrogena Pure and Free Sunblock with an SPF of 60. It was highly recommend by our pedi.
