"Do twins run in your family?"

I swear nearly every single person who has found out about my twins, in particular my co-workers ask me this question.  Is this an indirect way of asking if we used fertility treatments or something?  Because no, twins do not run in our family.  We are almost sure they are identical so genetics wouldn't matter anyway, is what I usually tell people.  I have only had 2 people actually ask if we used fertility treatments/drugs, which we did not.  I'm guessing this line of questioning will never end, will it?

Re: "Do twins run in your family?"

  • I have two favorite answers to this question, and it totally depends on my mood... If I'm not up for talking about it, "they do now!" works.  If I'm snarky, I'll say something along the line of "drugs."  (We did IVF, so drugs was a part of it!)

However, my most favorite question of all, after we tell them it's a boy and a girl, is...  "are they identical?"  Really?!?  Indifferent

People just don't know what to say, sometimes...

  • Oh yes, I get asked this question constantly. I'm so sick of repeating the same answer over and over again.

  • I get this question all the time too. I have never been asked if we used fertility treatments though. Never. My husband was asked by a collegue of his if we did but that's the only comment we've ever got regarding fertility tx's.

  • I got this question all the time when we started telling people.  The weirdest was the people who said "whose side do twins run in?" like you can't have twins unless there's a family history.  Then people didn't seem to believe me when I explained that my husband's side of the family has absolutely nothing to do with it.  I only got asked about fertility treatments a few times.

That's for sure. I had someone tell me today (after looking at my LOs), "I guess they could be twins." I was like, really? You guess? They ARE twins and I just told you that. Duhhhh. People are dumb.

  • I know. I get this question ALL the time and fertility treatment questions too! People have no shame.

Right now I am pretty big and I got asked the other day at the park when I was having my baby. I was like, well I am having twins so I have awhile.  You should have seen the response and the ladies talking and pointing at me. I felt like I belonged in the zoo or something. I guess I better get used to that with twins.  UGH.

  • People have stopped asking as much now that the girls are here, but when I was pregnant it was happening all.the.time!!!

  • I usually say, "they run a little in my family, but it was still a surprise."  It's mostly true.

  • I think its everyone's curiousity on fertility treatments.  Since I used them I always answer "no, but they do run in fertility treatments" which is generally followed by an awkward silence :)

Most people don't understand the identicals aren't genetic (I didn't know that until recently)

  • Nope, you will get that question for the rest of your life. My twins are five years old and I get that question on a daily basis.

If you want a good laugh, go to youtube and search "Mompetition multiples". It is a HILARIOUS and totally accurate cartoon depiction of the conversations you will have for the rest of your lives! It is so funny.

  • I too get this all the time.  I've decided this is the proding question - people don't want to ask you if you had IF treatments and have decided this is more polite (which I guess it is).  I have also started responded with "They do now!"  I don't think that people really want to know everything we went through to get our twins.

This .... I don't even bother explaining to them the differences between ID and frats anymore.  I just smile and agree with whatever they're saying.  It makes their day .. LOL

  • Yup, I get asked all the time.  People are shocked when I say no.  Question two is often about fertility drugs.  When I say no to that, they seem perplexed as to how twins could possibly have happened!

  • My answer is "no, but they are real common at my fertility clinic".

  • Yes, you will get this all the time. Since we did IVF, it depends on my mood as to what my answer is. I usually stick with: "I have no idea, since I'm adopted" which is true and always leaves people with no clue what to say next. It gives me more than enough time to switch the subject and say how truly blessed we are to have 2 healthy babies.

  • I get this even more now that people are finding out I concieved a second set of twins. So I just say yes since in my case they do on my mom and dads side. It is annoying.
