New AAP recommendations for rear facing carseats...

https://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/carseat2011.htm

They are recommending children be rear facing until age 2. I wish I could but I can't fit rear facing convertible carseats in our truck. We have to keep them in their infant carseats until they outgrow them and then we'll have to put them forward facing in their convertible unless we get a suburban between now and then.

Mom to six awesome kids - Levi is 12, Landen is 8, Gabrielle is 6, Lucas is 3, and Oliver and Samuel are 2 years old. Love my crew. Baby Birthday Ticker TickerBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Re: New AAP recommendations for rear facing carseats...

  • I have heard this recommendation before.  I had DS1 rearfacing past his first bday, but he started to look uncomfortable around 19 mos. so I turned him around.

  • Will they fit in the infant seats until 1?  My son was too tall by 5 months or something.  Our convertible seats actually had more room than the infant seats because they sat more upright.

  • Our kids are still rear facing at 19 months but my son just hit the length for the seat so we'll be turning them in the next week or so.

We struggled w/ the seats in our car too, MH really was uncomfortable w/ the infant seat back there. So when we went to get convertible seats we brought them all out to the car to try to find the best one for MH to be able to drive. We got the Britax Diplomat, which I believe has been discontinued (probably b/c they anticipated what happened to us), b/c it was the smallest & allowed MH to drive more comfortably than with the infant seats. However, it has lower limits for weight & height because of that & now they can't remain RF until 2.

So, I guess my long story is to tell you to just try going to a store with a wide selection (IMO buy buy baby has the best selection if you have one nearby) and see what they have & how it fits in your car but keep in mind the normal length/weight for kids at 2 yrs old.  And, also keep in mind that if you can keep them RF for as long as possible, even if it can't go all the way to 2, it is ok and you need to do what is best for you & your family.
