Back. Practice over a bed or couch and YouTube the videos on doing a back carry. I started doing them when he was about 6 months old and the back is way more comfy, you can do more things and you hardly feel their weight once their older. I put him on the front if I know he really needs to nap but he will nap on my back too, it just takes longer for him to fall asleep.
I can only think of two times that I've used the back carry: first when we took DD1 for a hike on vacation once, and second when I needed to finish cooking dinner one night but DD2 just wanted to be held.

Front. DS is over 10 months, but still isn't even 17 lbs yet. I mostly just love the cuddles, and I like to be able to see what he is doing. When he's on my back, I'm just wondering how things are going back there! I think I need a rearview mirror...=)
Front. we have tried back a couple of times and DS hates it. He just pushes himself away and throws his head back instead of looking to the side. It might be time to try it again, though, since it's been a month or two.
Back carry. I have a Beco (the Butterfly which allows for rear-facing front carry or back carry- the Beco Gemini allows for hip and front-facing front carry) and find it more comfortable with him on my back. He does not fall asleep in it on my back though.

I have to add that without fail, whenever I'm around other people and getting DD2 into the back carry with my Beco, I either get, "Do you need any help??!" or these anxious, OMG-she's-going-to-drop-that-baby looks.
It's so predictable that it makes me giggle a little inside now. I know it looks awkward while I'm supporting her up there with one arm while I'm getting my other through the straps. On one hand I think it's nice that people offer to help, but really, I do this by myself all the time and have never dropped her!
Re: Do you mostly wear your carrier on back or front?
This.
Front but I'm thinking about trying the back carry now. I'm going to practice over a couch like Anabelle said,
I'm so excited about the Boba I just bought!
Now that DD2 is bigger, she's on my back 95% of the time.
I have a Beco. I also wear my toddler back there from time to time.

Front. I haven't figured out how to get him on my back yet, and plus I don't know how to maneuver the "X" straps of my Bjorn around my big boobies.
DH prefers wearing him on his back, though.
