Worried about to much weight gain to early!!

I'm starting to get a little worried, please help! I am currently 14 weeks pregnant with twins and have always considered myself to be in pretty good shape running 2-3 miles 5 times a week.  Before I got pregnant I was 141lbs and am 5'7. This is my first pregnancy and everywhere I have read says you should only gain 6-8 lbs in your first trimester and at 14 weeks I have gained 15 lbs!!! I had been soooo sick and was on Zophran but the only thing that seemed to help me was eating. I am just scared I have put on to much to soon! I had to stop work g out for a out a month bc I had been to sick, but recently picked it back up although it's hard bc I can only walk and now feel so out of shape. Seems like everything I read all moms of multiples have lost weight in their first trimester and here I have gained 15. Kind of freaking out!! I just want healthy babies but don't want togain to much to soon!! Anyone had anything similar happen?

Re: Worried about to much weight gain to early!!

  • Read Dr. Luke's book ASAP.

your goal should be 24lbs in the first 24 weeks with twins (if you are not overweight, which you are not).... you want to gain as much as you can as fast as you can (in a healthy way) so they will be as big as possible if they are born early.

you are doing a GREAT job - do not stress!  I aimed for 24 in 24 and only gained 19... and that was TRYING hard to gain (my boys just kept eating up the energy).... but i managed to put on more in the 3rd tri - and they were born healthy and big at 38w, 6lb 6oz, and 7lb 15.6oz.... I gained about 50lbs total and would do it again in a heartbeat to have another set of healthy twins!

Dr. Luke's book goes into detail about gaining... most here don't follow her actual diet- but the guidelines for gaining.

  • Dr. Barbara Luke recommends in her book to gain 20 pounds by 20 weeks to support a healthy twin pg, however many MoMs find this hard to do, and do their best.  As my pg progressed I found it really hard to fit much in my stomach, and had to start eating really high calorie foods to support me and the babies, I think this is why she recommends this.  So taking that into consideration - congratulation, you're on the right track for a healthy multiple pg!

  • You're doing great--don't worry! Like others posted, it's easier to gain now when you can--I can vouch that carrying babies to almost 39 weeks, it was really hard to eat in that last tri! And also, gaining early with multiples is a really healthy, positive thing to do!

As far as exercising, it gets easier. You'll hopefully get a second wind soon and it won't seem so hard to do your walking or whatever exercises you are able to do this pg.

Keep up the good work Yes

  • I don't really know what to say, I wouldnt worry to much about it. I know at my 21 week appointment i had only gained 15 lbs so far & in the last 15 weeks i have gained 30 pounds apparently I havent done to bad I was over weight to start with not proud of it but i will work it off after.

I wouldnt be to concerned though hunn, good luck :)

  • You have not gained too much too fast.  Don't stress and remember that your weight gain will be different than a singleton pregnancy.
  • I was very much like you in the beginning of my pregnancy.  I ran daily and was a low-average weight.  In my first trimester I gained 23 lbs.  I was very concerned.  I spoke with the nutritionist that consults with my obgyn and she said that my metabolism was probably in a state of shock since I had really changed things once I got pregnant (cutting down on exercising).  The weight gain has slowed quite significantly for me.  Since week 22 I havent gained any weight, but the babies are still growing nicely.  I have not changed my caloric intake at all.

Just remind yourself that you can lose the weight after the kids come and that they are worth it! Good luck to you!

  • I was 140 lbs and 5'6" at the beginning of my last twin pregnancy. I worried too that I was gaining too much too fast. But in the end I gained my 24 in 24 and only gained exactly 50 lbs total. I was back down to 158 at my 6 wk post partum appointment. I am glad I gained in the beginning because from 24 weeks on it became very difficult to eat I had alot of acid reflux and no room in my belly for much food.
