I'm a mildly obsessed with literary names, since my fn is one (Heidi). What are your favorites? Mine are:
Elinor (Sense and Sensibility)
Edgar (Wuthering Heights, also my father's mn)
Katherina (Taming of the Shrew, also a form of my mother's fn Kathy)
I also have to admit that I love Eowyn, Aragorn, and Arwen (all from Lord of the Rings). I couldn't do that to my future kids though lol
Re: What are your favorite literary names?
Oh I forgot! I went to school with a girl named Eowyn!
Silas from Silas Marner
Ross from Macbeth
Elzbieta from The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
I teach HS English and public speaking. I read a LOT :P
Atticus (DS's middle name!) from TKAM.
Holden (Catcher in the Rye)
Charlotte (as in Bronte)
I like Juliet, but since I teach freshman English, I'd never live it down if I actually used it.
ETA: Truman (as in Capote)
Hands-down Elinor and Lydia (even though I hated her character). HUGE Jane Austen fan here. Also love the name Jane. Josephine is up there too.
I'm also very fond of Ophelia, Viola, Cecelia, Portia, Beatrice, Rosalind...Shakespeare had some great ones.
For boys: Atticus, Oliver, Jay (Gatsby), (Joseph) Conrad, Jacques, Duncan
My next door neighbor has 3 kids, 2 girls called Arwyn and Galadriel and a boy called Aragorn.
The dogs are called Frodo and Shadowfax (Gandalfs horse) all the kids were born in the 70s and 80s way before the movies, he was just really in to the books I guess, which is kinda cool.
I love Shakespearean names - Hermione, Desdemona, Juliet, Iago, Florizel etc not that I would ever name my kids the more obscure ones, but I still like them.
Dickens had some good names too.
Viola, Cosette, Miranda, Heidi , Arthur, Peter (Narnia), Antonia (My Antonia), Gray, Juliet, Charlotte (Bronte), Darcy.
Edited: Also, Guinevere
I love... Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter (Chronicles of Narnia)
Both of these are mine too. LOVE them!!

My daughter is Madeline (Child's Lit).
The girls name we have chosen is Eloise. (Child's Lit)
Ophelia (Hamlet-Shakespeare)
Cordelia (King Lear)
Duncan, Lennox (Macbeth)
If you can't tell I was a Shakespeare Major in College.
Estella - Great Expectations
Heidi - Heidi
Frances (Franny) - Franny & Zooey
Daisy - Daisy Miller
Max - Where the Wild Things Are
Holden - Catcher in the Rye
Augustus (Gus) - Lonesome Dove
Atticus - To Kill a Mockingbird
Also writer's names: (Charlotte, Emily, or Anne) Bronte, (J.D.) Salinger, Helene (Hanff), Cormac (McCarthy), Amos (Oz)
I had so many on my baby name list! And DH shot the majority of them down, even though most of the more obscure ones I was only thinking of for MNs Oh well, I still love the little guy's name, and I'm doing a child's literature theme for the nursery .
For boys I had: Atticus, Sawyer, Arthur, Scout, Darcy, Rhett, Carlisle (and I didn't even really like the Twilight series that much)...I know I had more, but my mind is drawing a complete blank on the rest
For girls I had: Matilda (my favorite book from my childhood!), Scarlett, Elizabeth, Jane, Elinore, Daisy, Charlotte, Esme, Lydia, Beatrice, Penelope, Hermione, Molly, Annabelle (from the Edgar Allen Poe poem, my absolute favorite!), once again, I know there was more, but it's been the better part of a month since I've looked at my baby name list, so most of it is already forgotten.
My faves are: Colin from The Secret Garden, and from GWTW Rhett and Scarlett of course (would have named DD Scarlett but our last name is a color too and I thought Scarlett Grey may indicate a deep shade of mauve. LOL.)
Fun!
My current favorite name is Erasmus, from Anathem. I totally wouldn't use it. I also have a bizarre love for the surname Shaftoe, but no way to work it into use. I'm thinking Bobby Shaftoe would be an excellent name for the yellow lab DH is dreaming of owning. (I LOVE Neal Stephenson, if you haven't figured out )
More of my favorite names are as follows:
Huck (obvious)
Lenore (E.A. Poe)
Lara (Dr. Zhivago)
Samuel after Samuel Clemens
Winston (1984)
Wyoh (The Moon is a Harsh Mistress)
Tacy (from the Betsy-Tacy children's books), but I ruined it by using it for my cat.
Cosette (Les Miserables)
Augusten (Burroughs, the author)
And ever since reading "The Hunger Games," I'm in love with the name Finnick.
Oh, and while I didn't name him "after" the character, I have always liked Henry since I was little (Beverly Cleary books)
Elizabeth, Darcy, Jane, Catherine, Henry, Brandon, Emma (Jane Austen)
Juliet, Cordelia, Hero, Duncan, Helena, Sebastian (Shakespeare)
Atticus (TKAM)
Holden (Catcher in the Rye)
That takes some balls! Maybe I can talk myself into it. Although I wouldn't name siblings Arwen and Aragorn since they are lovers lol
I approve!
Emma, Jane, Elizabeth, Kitty, Bronte, Austen, Daisy, Viola, Kate, Portia, Finnegan, Alice, Jack, Oliver, Edgar, Edmund
and I love the name Bramasole, which is the house in Under the Tuscan Sun. I don't think I could do that to a child, though ... perhaps a pet, somewhere down the line.
I love Scarlett. It's on our list, and DH's top choice.
Others...
Atticus (To Kill a Mockingbird)
Angelo (Measure for Measure)
Othello, Emilia and Iago (Othello)
Stella and Blanche (A Streetcar Named Desire)
Jett and Jordan (Giant)
Me too, for sure. BUt then I moved next to a total d-bag whose name is Colin. I h.a.t.e. him with a passion. <sigh>
Hermione from Harry Potter is also one of my most favorite names. it's so cool!! my Dh thinks it's crazy.
Ha! I had a beta fish named this and loved it!
