Infertility

Please tell me about your experience with Varicocele

My husband was diagnosed with a Stage 4 Varicocele yesterday.  We have surgery scheduled for November 10th.  The Urologist seemed very optimistic that after this is done, we will be able to conceive naturally.  I was hoping to hear other people's stories.

 Thanks!

  • My DH had surgery almost 1year ago...he morph went from 0%-3%, count from 9 mill to 25 mill and motility is up too. We didn't really see much improvement for nearly 9 months. We are not pg yet...but hopefully soon:) Good luck!!!

  • My DH had the surgery on Sept 25th.  The surgery went well  and it only took about an hour for the actually surgery - it was a total of 7 hours in the hospital including recovery and everything. His recovery was pretty smooth - he was pretty sore for the first two days and just slept most of the time but by the third day he was out of bed - he stayed home from work for 6 days and when he went back to work he was pretty sore because he has such a physical job - it has been two weeks and he is pretty much back to normal - he goes in for a follow up appointment to check his incision on Tues - he only had one incision and only had one varicocele on his left side - he will be tested again in 3 months to see if there is any improve with his counts.  Make sure the your DH puts ice on the incision and take is pain medication and also to try and stay in bed and take it easy for as long as possible.  Best of luck to you and your DH.

  • Hi there!

We're in the exact same boat.  H has a grade 3 varicocele (I'm curious about you mentioning a 4, b/c I'm pretty sure 3 is the highest).  He's had it diagnosed for years, but we recently found out it's effecting his fertility.

Based on his numbers, I think his count is okay, its the motility, viscosity, and morph (really low) which are bad.  We have a follow-up with the Urologist on Thursday to talk in more detail about his numbers and next steps (which will likely be the surgery).  We should keep in touch since we are at about the same point.  :)

I know there are several other girls on the board with experience in this area.  I've really found a lot of comfort in reading thier blogs, posts, etc.

  • My husband has bilateral varicocele.  He is scheduled for surgery on 10/22.  He has low count, motility and morphology.  We were told it could take as long as a year to see improvement.  We were also told it is a 70% chance that his numbers will improve and also that our chances of becomming pg will double. Fingers crossed.
  • My DH had it done in March.  His recovery was pretty fast.  He was down for 6 days.  Had it done on Thursday so that he would have the weekend to recover.  That way he was only out of work for 3 days.  He was in a good bit of pain Thur, Fri and Sat.  We kept ice on the incisions and kept him good and drugged up.  He was sore for a few weeks.  Wearing tight undies helped with that.  Although I did have to reposes said tight undies as he began to like them.

His count went up at the 3 month check up.  Motility went up 1% and morph was the same.  Uro put him on clomid and he has a follow up appt set up for November.  I am praying that the Motility and Morph have increased!!!!!

Good luck to your Dh.  Take good care of him!
