A friend of mine flew with her 6/7 month old. She nursed him during take-off and landing, and he slept pretty much the entire ride. Maybe do that? For the 3 1/2 year old, maybe just bring plenty of activites (coloring books, books, I want to say a Gameboy, but they aren't called that anymore, lol). I'm sure it will go fine.
ETA: Our babies are birthday buddies
We're doing that in July - 2 flights, one of which is a long-haul transatlantic - yikes!
We flew with DS when he was 6-7 months, the same flights. He didn't sleep for one long-haul, but did the overnight - whilst nursing. Be prepared to entertain. BF during take off and landing. Take a wrap/sling/etc if you've got it, for going around the airport, but also for walking the plane if LO won't settle. Bring spares of everything: clothes, toys, teethers, meds, wipes, diapers, etc.
For DS, who will have just turned 3, we're borrowing a portabld dvd player, plus his normal activities: books, coloring, matchbox cars, etc. New small toys to take out periodically worked when he was 18 months, so we'll do that again. Plus LOTS of snacks - just not too many super sweet ones, if your LO is like DS, who crashes into horrific tantrums. :P
A DVD player is great, along with snacks, coloring books, and new small toys. When we fly we always bring DD1's carseat onboard, because she is hyper and I dont trust her to sit still, so we have carseat "wheels" that attach, and we push her through the airport. Maybe by the time she is 3 1/2 we wont have to do that, but just a thought.
Bring an empty sippy cup, so you can buy juice/water after security and not have it spilled all over the place.
I carry DD2 in the bjorn through the airport and on to the plane. But at 8 months depending on the size of the baby that might not be fun. So maybe a double stroller to push to the gate?
Check anything you wont need on board, we used to hate checking luggage but there is no way to manage it all.
Good luck, and ask the flight attendants for help if you need it. They are usually really great!
