Baby Names

I'm in Love with U

I was looking over my long list of girls' names and realized that many of my favorites had something in common: the oo sound (as in zoo, blue, shoe, etc.). I don't know why I am attracted to this sound, but at least half the names on my list had were U or oo names. Can you think of more to add? (Comments/opinions are also welcome ? I have a thick skin and am not ttc any time soon).

Oona/Una

Luna

Susanna

Ruby

Lucy

Louisa

Julia

Lucretia

Jerusha

Also Eugenia and Euphemia, but that's a long U sound (very close!).

Re: I'm in Love with U

  • I like that sound, too!  What about: Juniper/June?
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.

  • LOVE love LOVE Lucretia. If we ever have a girl I'd like DH to consider it.

  • The only ones I have on my list are Junia, Keturah, Lucienne, Tallulah. Welp, that was way more than I expected.

Also, I'm adding Eulalia. I know you said Eugenia and Euphemia don't count, but IMO they should. All of the names you listed contain long U sounds. A short U sound would be as in "luck" or "dug".

ETA: In case you weren't still checking the Sylvie thread, I just wanted to let you know I responded to your hypothesis. Smile

  • I have: Julianna, Louisa, Lucinda, Muriel, Ruby, Tallulah, Tuesday, Ursula. Interesting.

I like Ursula too!  Always have.  DH would never go for it.

  • Lucretia sounds like "secretion" as in an oozing wound or something. NMS at all.

You are correct, of course, about the short u. I was just trying to draw a distinction between the true long u ("yoo" as in use) and the oo sound (as in true ? troo, not tryoo).

I'm glad you're excited about Sylvia! I love that name ? perhaps it deserves a spot among the botanicals?

  • Love Eulalia and Eudora! Not sure if I could get away with Eulalia as a sister for Amalia ? it looks like a tractor trailer hauling vowels got into an accident ? but I still like it, despite the L.M.Montgomery Eulalie Bugle association.

I'm also liking Junia and June. Juliana is lovely, but my cousin's baby (exact same age as DD) is Giuliana ? we are close and the two girls are the only babies in the family so far.

I forgot all about virtue names ? Truth, Prudence, Ruth (is Ruth a virtue name? Opposite of ruthless?)

    Nice Yes

Too bad it would take me almost the rest of the month to make a new siggy. haha

I'd love to see it in your siggy, though! And from the sound of that thread, a lot of BNBers would like to see it. I was sort of surprised that thread came out so positive.

  • I had an aunt named Eulagene.

I think it was just an attempt at a feminized version of Eugene though since my grandfather apparently loved the name Eugene since he named two of his sons this.

ETA: There's also Elula, which is what Sasha Baron Cohen named his daughter. :)

I love Drusilla and Tallulah (although I don't think I have the guts to use either)
