Baby is "really low"

What would you guess that means? I should have asked the doctor what station that corresponds with, but I had to see a doctor I didn't know today, and I was a little shy with the questions. She just said he was "really low," and that she could feel his head. Any guesses as to what station that might be?

Also, I have read on here that dilation and effacement don't mean much in determining when the baby will actually be born, but what about the stations? If a baby is at zero station as opposed to -2, does that mean labor is near? I haven't really read anything that discusses that aspect. Anyway, I had my first internal today, along with the strep test, and I have been thinking about her comment all day. Oh, and I am one centimeter dilated. :)

  • I am also "really low" and I am at -1 station. Unfortunately, like dilation and effacement, it doesn't mean anything as far as when you will go into labor.

  • My midwife told me that she could feel the baby's head at -3 station and he was "low" but that could just be that he is actually engaged in the birth canal instead of slightly crooked (u/s at 36w confirmed) or breech (every time before 36w).

She did tell me that station/effacement/dialation didn't mean much other than the fact that my body is doing what it is suppose to do...

  • The baby's head is "engaged" when it is at 0 station. According to my nursing textbooks, this happens, on average, 2 weeks prior to delivery for first-time mothers. For 2+ moms, this may not happen until labor. But anything goes in the real world.

I have no idea where I'm at. My baby feels low, but my doc doesn't do internals until I'm in labor or an induction is planned. He said that internal exams "cause discomfort without providing valuable information, so what's the point?" which is true, but I am still curious what my body is up to (but not curious enough to request one, lol).
