Baby Names

Do you consider Declan a trendy name?

Also do you think it is getting overly popular? Husband and I are really struggling to come up with any names. I have no problem with popular traditional names, but I want to stay away from popular trendy names. (does that even make any sense?)

IMO it is trendy.  It's not BAD trendy though so maybe popular (at least one this board) would be a better word for it.

  • Kind of, but only because I think Irish names are really popular right now.

  • No, I don't.  While I do know 2 other people who used that name, I actually had never heard of it until we decided to use it.   in 2009, it was 308 in popularity which when you really think about what that means in relation to the # of babies born that year - not that many were really named Declan.

  • Oh, and most people who I say the name too look at me like I have 2 heads and are like "WHAT'S his name?!".

  • My husband has liked this name for years, and it is now our nephew's name. Irish families, Irish last name (as you can tell from my screen name)

I wouldn't really call it trendy. It's not going to be overly popular. You may hear it here and there, but I'm betting any Declan will be the only one in their class.

FWIW, i really like the name and we were going to use it until BIL & SIL beat us to the punch!

  • I don't think it's trendy.  I think it's a fine Irish name that is becoming slightly more popular in the U.S. but is still fairly new to the general U.S. population.  My DH has this name as #1 on his list, but to me it's a little too "out there" in the sense that people will react like the PP said--"what?"  I like it for other people to use, I'm just not so sure it's for me.

  • For some reason this is one of the most popular names in my area.  I know 4 little Declans.  I do like the name and hadn't heard it until about 4 years ago. I don't think it is overly popular, but definitely gaining.
  • I love the name Declan, which is on my list, but my H does not like at all.  I don't think of it as being trendy.  Now Mason, which is another on our list, I would consider trendy.

  • Not like Mason, Aiden, or Andrew.  There's actually like 7 Andrews (out of like 30-ish Moms) in my MOMs club.  Wink

  • I feel like it is following in the path of Aidan.  Five-ish years ago, Aidan was just an Irish name that was becoming more popular in the US.  Now, I know about a billion of them, or some variation of that name.  It wouldn't shock me if Declan is pretty popular in a few years.

  • Well, it's certainly on-trend with the Irish name explosion.

Most people here will tell you it's not trendy just because it's not made up and doesn't rhyme with Aidan. Not true. Trendy =/= stupid, automatically. Even though the names are very old, Irish names are trendy right now. Declan fits into that category.

This is what I am afraid of. I worry that it would be the future Aidan.

    Well said.

  • If you asked me a year ago I would have said no way. But I know three little Declans and have met a few more on playgrounds, doctor's offices, etc.

I also fear the Aidan/Liam trajectory for this name.

  • Yes, i think it is very trendy,,,,,the whole irish name thing is very trendy.
  • I know someone who named her son Declan about 3 years ago and it wasn't even in the top 1000. I'm sure it is now, but no where near the top.

  • Why is the Irish thing trendy right now...I am Irish on both sides..but I just dont get where this came from? and of course its right when I am going to get prego soon lol
  • It really just depends on your area. I've never, ever met ANYONE with this name, and I've only heard of it in the past 6 months. Trendy? Maybe in some areas. Not in mine. Same with Aidan, Liam...

I agree. I just hope we don't have to deal with Heclan, Breclan, Jeclan, and Zeclan any time soon!

I think this is the very definition of trendy, in the U.S.! It was virtually unheard of 13 years ago. It made it's first appearance in the Top 1000 in 1998, and when the 2010 numbers come out, it will already be up to the 200s!
