What are you telling people to get son for 1st bday?

I am seriously considering asking my guests to make donations to our NICU in lieu of gifts since I feel like my son already has everything he could ever need.  He has so many toys from my nieces.  The only things we really need are a toy chest and an extra set of foam tiles for playing on.  And possibly toys for boys if they exist at this age.  I am really picky with clothes and would prefer to just buy these myself.

  • We are getting Hudson a Swing for our tree in the backyard and a wagon for the zoo.

His godmother asked me last night and I told her a small pool for outside this summer because he doesn't have much as far as outside toys go.

I am also thinking about a turtle sandbox, but I am not sure yet.

  • I think donations for the NICU is an awesome sentiment to the people that helped him be able to celebrate a first birthday in the first place, but this goes along with a "No gifts please" kind of party, which is a whole different issue.

People would have to receive something specific on where to make donations, so if you don't find it to be tacky, you could advise people who ask you "What does DS want for his birthday?" But, to put it anywhere on the invitation is you assuming that someone would bring gifts.

  • I'm thinking outside toys, like a little pool, a sandbox, little toy lawn mower & rake, that kind of stuff.  Everything we have now is indoor toys.

  • I'm asking for clothes, outdoor toys and books. I have NO INTEREST in having MORE indoor toys! He has more than enough of those!! (Plus, I still have some in the closet for him!!) But, I'm not picky about clothes...so I can see how if you are you'd want to pick them out yourself :)
  • If people ask, I'm going to say swimming toys, outdoors type toys, or books.  We have more than enough toys for inside at this point!!

  • I'm thinking of asking people for donations instead of gifts.  My 15 year old nephew was just diagnosed with cancer, and my sister is a single mom.  She has to go back to work in order to keep his medical insurance.  She is going to be bombarded with medical bills.  DS already has a ton of toys, I don't think he needs anymore for awhile.
