I am alittle nervous. I am 36 so my doctor has me seeing a specialist on 4/6 for a sono and bloodwork. Looking for ds. I have never had these tests before. Anyone had to have this done?
Most of us see a Maternal Fetal Specialist, aka Perinatologist.
I consider my MFM (Peri) to be my real doctor and my OB to be the "baby catcher".
Most of the important tests, diagnostics and cool high tech stuff happens with the specialist.
OB visits are a joke, they stick a doppler on my belly to hear the baby's heart beat, sometimes use something as high tech as a measuring tape on my belly, have me pee in a cup, take my blood pressure then send me on my way.
It really doesn't do much to assure me that my baby's doing ok LOL.
I've seen the specialist about once a month since week 11
We had one quick visit with a genetic counsler when we did our 20 week US. She went over our risks factors, explained why DS and other things are more likely and sent us on our way. We opted for the sequential screen and that was it. Those numbers came back OK, and that was good enough for us. You can decided what and how many tests you want. All depends on how much you need to "be sure" all is well in there!
I know the feeling, I was 36 the first time and am 40 this time. I just had my 1st trimester screening and it usually includes bloodwork and a sonogram. Then they give you your "risk factor" in regards to Down's and Trisomy. Based on the risk factor numbers they then recommend whether or not you should get an amnio or CVS. I just had mine done and it was very good, see my post below about being relieved after NT scan.
You will be very glad you had it done and more than likely everything will be fine. GL and keep us posted!!
Mother of a beautiful little boy 11/01/07!
Expecting #2 EDD 9/28/11
What a wonderful surprise!!!
Sounds pretty standard. Other than a brief appt. w/ a genetic counselor during my 1st pregnancy I haven't had to see any specialists or do any other specialists during either pregnancy. I opted for the sequential screen (u/s and bloodwork) for both pregnancies. Because my risks came back fairly low I decided against any invasive testing.
I haven't had mine yet, but I go this Friday 3/25 for my indepth u/s. I am having the integrated screen done which is the BW & u/s in 1st tri & just BW in the 2nd tri. I too am 36. I can let you know how it went on Friday.

I had the NT test (bloodwork and ultrasound) with my son. I found it non invasive and very reassuring
Plus its another chance to see your baby with the ultrasound.
Try not to stress
