The hostesses in my family don't expect to receive a present, and usually get offended if you give them something. So I got around it as follows:
Best Friend: Treated her to a nice dinner at a restaurant she's been wanting to try but her funds have been too low to treat herself.
Mom: MH and I are building a frame for my parent's bedroom out of reclaimed wood. She had mentioned that she wanted one anyway, so we figured that it's a little more personal if we make it for her. I'm also getting her and my dad I love Granma/Granpa mugs, they lovvveee cheesy little things like that.
The week of my shower Bath and Body works was running a sale on their big candles and both of my hosts love candles so I got them big three wick ones with cute holders that go around the jar.

My SIL threw mine and she's a big wine-o so I got her her fave red and white wines and a red and white wine glass with her name engraved in it from Things Remembered.
For my sisters and mom, I got them different pieces of jewelry from T.J. Maxx that I knew they would like. For my friends/MIL shower, I got my MIL some grandmother goodies from Hallmark because it is her first grandchild and a gift certificate to her favorite restaurant, my two friends I got them both Old Navy gift cards and then one got one of those painted wine glasses that says Thank You on it, she collects those, and the other I got a friends figurine from that Willow Tree line they sell at Hallmark, Cracker Barrel, places like that. It really is up to you how personal you want to get with it. I am obsessed with buying people the "perfect gifts", so I went a little over board.
Re: shower hostess gifts...
I got a gift card to a restaurant for $50 when I hosted on recently.
I gave my mom and sister fancy wine for hosting my family party (plus flowers for my mom).
I'm planning on giving a spa gift certificate for the girlfriend hosting mine.
I had one at work only. So the next day i brought the two girls flowers and a card. I spent about $25 on them each. I thought that was enough.
If it was my mother or best friend, i might have done more..wine or something.
