I think a first birthday is a big deal so I would say do a real invitation. We've done a lot of evites but they were for adult birthdays or house parties.
I think we'll start doing real invites when they start inviting kids from school. I remember how much I loved getting invitations when I was little. Right now it's just our friends and families. And if someone wants to get their nose bent out of joint because I emailed them an invite...well I probably wouldn't be friends with them in the first place actually.
An evite is one thing. A pdf copy of an invitation is another thing entirely.
What's the difference? Either way, you're electronically inviting someone.
Sure, but evite also allows you to manage your RSVPs and show off your guest list, so it serves as more than just an invitation. A pdf just looks like you're too cheap to send invitations, imo.
eta: I also don't have anything against an email invite, at least for casual get togethers. It's the pdf of a real invitation that I find cheap and tacky.

I find it tacky to send a PDF. It isn't that I think you should always send a mailed invite but it is the whole PDF thing that bothers me. I would just call everyone and tell them about the party instead of a PDF.

I think the only time an emailed invite ( be it a PDF or evite or whatnot) is acceptable is for pretty casual gatherings - like a game night, movie night or guys/girls night out.
I PDFed the invite for DS's 1st birthday. Then I told privately those who I knew may want a copy that I could print one out for them. only 3 people said they would keep one as a remembrance (2 grandmas and one aunt)
I voted SS because I don't ALWAYS check my e-mail. I might also be afraid if it would go into someone's junk box and they claim they never received it and felt hurt they didn't get invited (although I guess that could happen with USPS too).
I don't like PDFs in emails because I have to save them and then open them up. I know it's lazy, lol.
If you're thinking about sending an email/digial invite you should try Punchbowl. They have really cute email invites you can send, and then people RSVP online.
Re: PDF e-mailed invites. Clicky poll.

ETA: I changed the title so as not to confuse someone else.
I took this to mean that it isn't quite as casual as many forms of an e-vite

Oh. Perhaps. I wasn't being snarky, I really didn't know the difference.

I voted SS.
If it were informal and I if I were VERY CLOSE to the sender and I knew that everybody is getting the same treatment, Then I would not mind.
For a formal event, or if I were not close to the sender, I'd think is tacky.
