I think the answer to this really depends a lot on what type of machine you have. I used to use a Downy Ball because I had an old top loader but now I have a front loader that has a softener dispenser which I use (once in a while, mostly use nothing at all)
i use vinegar in the rinse (before the extra rinse) in all my diaper washes... i only use it in my towels, dog blankets every time... all the other loads don't get it or get it rarely.
i wanted to mention that i have a top loader with the softener dispenser... but before i had that (when we rented a townhouse and had an old stackable washer/dryer) i used the downy ball

i don't know that the dispenser on our machine works. the machine is one my dad bought when i was born. the little cup is soooo cruddy looking. i tried to clean it, but i think the crud is now part of the cup. therefore i dump in the rinse cycle if i can rememebr.
I have a top loader with a fabric softener dispenser so I use that. If I didn't have that, I'd use a downy ball because I'd never remember to catch the rinse cycle to add it manually. Vinegar is basically replacing your fabric softener so whatever you would normally do to add fs you'll do with the vinegar instead.
I use it on all my loads - cd or otherwise. We've completely phased out fabric softener. Even my picky dh can't tell the difference.

OMG really? this REPLACES fabric softener?? and it works?? I just learned something new. I'm so excited! woohoo! I've been hating to use fabric softner and was wondering if there was an EF alternative.
