MN spelling help

Our DS is due any day (week) now.  We are either going to name him Jonah Anthony or Luke Donovan

If we go with Luke, the Donovan is after my father, who goes by Don.

Problem is... my dads name is spelled Donavon- not the traditional spelling, in fact it isn't even listed that way as a spelling in a baby name book.

I hate names spelled incorrectly, and don't know if we go with Luke if we should spell the name Donovan or like my dad's Donavon.  Thoughts?

Re: MN spelling help

  • My son will be named after my husband's grandfather, but I don't like the spelling of his name "Levie" Our son will be named Levi. :)

  • If you're honoring your father, I think you should use his spelling.

  • Luke Anthony is a possibility too, I just didn't want to give too many choices.  Thanks for the input.
  • This is really tough.  I think I would either use Donavon or not use it at all.  Otherwise it seems like "we would like to name him after you but your name looks totally illiterate".  For a mn, I don't think it's a big deal and I would go with Donavon.
  • If you don't like the misspelling then go with the correct spelling. Just make sure your father's feelings don't get hurt. Inform him ahead of time.

  • I like Luke Anthony and Luke Donovan (or Donavon).  I don't care for Jonah.

If you don't like the spelling of your dad's name then I would use the traditional spelling.  It's still honoring your father just as much, IMO.

  • I hate "misspelled" names more than anything, but if you're going to name him after someone, you should use that spelling, IMO. Since it's a middle name, like someone else pointed out, he'll only be using it on forms and stuff anyway.

I love, love, love Luke Anthony. If you use your father's name, then spell it the way your father does.
